About this project
What does Pete's Villager Trading Tweaks add?
Villager trading is a great mechanic, but the vanilla "grind" to get good trades is exhausting and unnecessary.
Tired of spending anywhere from ~10 minutes to HOURS at a time "rerolling" villager trades, breaking their stations and trying over and over? This happened to me, and I realized what a waste of time it felt like. What if you could get the trades you wanted the very FIRST time? Sounds awesome, right?
This mod aims to fix these issues in one fell swoop, while maintaining your game's authentic "Minecraft" feel.
Pete's Villager Trading Tweaks will let you choose the trade options your villagers offer - but to balance this, there are several features, as follows:
- Villager trades may only be chosen AFTER the villager is leveled up in their profession at least once
- Trades are drawn from the random potential options they would normally have in Vanilla
- Prices are Vanilla (and random for enchanted books)
How it works:
Your villager will no longer inherently have new assigned trades after they level up, until you interact with them. A GUI will open up, asking you to choose what trade options you want, which costs XP (5 levels, by default, but this can be adjusted in the config).
You can select both the trades that normally come with the leveling up process, or just one if you wish to ensure it selected and not left to chance. If you opt NOT to purchase trade selection for one or more, you have the option to let the villager decide! (They don't really decide, it's purely Vanilla chance, but we let them think they decided.) This is free, costs no XP.
If, by some cruel twist of fate, you are unable to afford your choices, fear not! I built in a safety default that kicks you out of the GUI without making a selection, and giving you a hint in chat.
And, of course...
I know you've been wondering, "But Pete, what about Librarians? How does that work??" Fear not, my friends. For a small additional cost of 3 XP levels (also configurable) you can choose the EXACT books villagers offer - though, again, not their initial trade, only at higher levels.
I consider this to be very Vanilla-friendly, as it does not affect fundamental gameplay, but instead simply makes it easier to get what you want. Prices are random, but at least you can get the books you want, guaranteed. The costs and leveling process makes so much more sense (to me) than the endless, painful grinding process of placing and breaking lecterns.
This mod was inspired by personal need, but it occurred to me that others would probably enjoy the mechanic and get some use out of it. Good luck, have fun!
(Just a heads up, a few minor improvements and versions for newer releases of Minecraft may be made going forward. No specific plans currently.)
Dependencies: Fabric, Fabric API
Compatibility: Currently untested with most mods that would affect the way villager trading works. I make no promises about this lol
