Gameplay Systems
OutpostZero: Campsites includes several interconnected systems built around wilderness exploration, survival, and campsite activity.
Tents
Abandoned tents generate naturally throughout the overworld, providing supplies and occasional encounters while adapting visually to the surrounding environment.
- Biome-aware colour palettes help tents fit naturally into forests, swamps, deserts, badlands, and colder environments
- Generated supplies are drawn from common, general, and rarer campsite loot
- Bears can spawn alongside generated tents, with species chosen to suit the surrounding habitat where possible
- When installed, tents can incorporate OutpostZero Crates, Industrial Workbenches and Industrial Drums, plus Tough As Nails Water Purifiers
- Placement checks help avoid unsuitable terrain and conflicting structures
Bears
Brown Bears and Black Bears spawn naturally in suitable habitats and can be encountered as wildlife or tamed as companions.
- Wild bears can be tamed using Honey Bottles
- Tamed bears can follow their owner, sit, and defend them in combat
- Raw and Cooked Salmon can be used to heal injured tamed bears, while Raw Salmon is used for breeding when fully healed
- Bears use dedicated eating behaviour when fed
- Both wild and tamed adult bears can fish from the water's edge
- Injured bears fish more frequently, with badly injured bears giving fishing greater priority
- Brown and Black Bears use different habitat and aggression behaviour
Bear Traps
Bear Traps can catch players and living creatures that step into them, holding the victim in place while they struggle to escape.
- Bait can attract suitable creatures toward an armed trap
- Animals respond to appropriate food, while Rotten Flesh attracts Zombies and related zombie types
- Trapped victims take damage and receive the Bleeding effect
- Struggling against the trap builds toward escape
- The Advanced Bear Trap automatically resets and can collect drops from creatures killed while trapped
- Advanced Bear Traps support automated bait insertion from above and on the sides and output extraction from below
Fishing
Fish Traps provide passive fishing from suitable bodies of water, with different bait changing what the trap can catch.
- Bread catches fish only
- Sweet Berries catch Salmon only
- Fish Bait catches fish with a chance of junk or treasure
- No bait catches junk only and operates much more slowly
- Advanced Fish Traps fish faster, improve the junk and treasure chances, and sometimes preserve their bait
- Advanced Fish Traps support automated bait insertion from above and output extraction from below
- Fish Bait can also be used in the off-hand with a fishing rod, reducing bite time by 5 seconds and stacking with Lure
Campfires
Healing Campfires are assembled directly in the world rather than crafted as a finished block.
- Craft Campfire Logs from logs, sticks, and a red mushroom, then place four together to assemble an unlit Healing Campfire
- Breaking a Healing Campfire returns its four Campfire Logs, allowing it to be packed up and rebuilt elsewhere
- Light sticks directly from a burning campfire to make torches
- Realistic Torches integration allows unlit torches to be re-lit directly from a campfire
Campsite Cooking
Marshmallows can be roasted interactively over lit campfires rather than simply being cooked through a furnace recipe.
- Marshmallows progress through Raw → Warm → Golden → Burnt while held over a campfire
- Golden marshmallows provide the best food value, while leaving them over the fire too long turns dessert into a cautionary tale
- Roasted marshmallows can be used to make equivalent Breaded or Cookie S'mores
Bear Claws
Bear Claws provide a climbing mechanic in addition to functioning as melee weapons.
- A Bear Claw must be equipped in each hand before climbing becomes active
- Players can climb suitable walls, descend under control, and move over ledges
- Diamond-Tipped Bear Claws provide improved climbing speed
