About this project

What does Critfall: Checks add?

Critfall: Checks

Checks adds the character sheet that Critfall leaves out: six ability scores, skills, saving throws and a proficiency bonus for every player and mob. New players build a character on first join and level from 1 to 20. Critfall still rolls every die; Checks gives it the modifiers.

Features

Build a character

On first join, a player picks a species, a background and a class, then sets their scores with the standard array, point buy, or dice rolled through Critfall, and picks their skills. Checks ships 9 species, 8 backgrounds and 12 classes, each with its own ability bonuses, skills, saves and traits such as darkvision or damage resistance.

Scores in every roll

Press K for your character sheet: abilities, saving throws, passive scores, skills, hit points, Hit Dice and Armor Class, with where each bonus comes from on hover. Your STR or DEX modifier goes into Critfall's attack and damage rolls, with your proficiency bonus on attacks. DEX goes into your Armor Class by armor weight, and your save modifiers into its saving throws. CON raises your max health. Explosions, fire, poison, wither, strong knockback and the Warden's darkness call for a saving throw.

Skills in play

Press G while looking at a villager, wandering trader or piglin to persuade, deceive, intimidate or pickpocket them; the result changes their prices and what the village thinks of you. Mobs can be intimidated or calmed. Out in the world, skills let you leap gaps, climb, sneak, spot and disarm tripwires, search chests and recall what you know about a monster.

Levels 1 to 20

Characters earn their own XP from vanilla XP and advancements, separate from the vanilla XP bar. Each level raises your max health by your class's hit die plus your CON modifier, always in whole hearts. The proficiency bonus grows with level, and levels 4, 8, 12, 16 and 19 give an ability score improvement, with extra ones for Fighters at 6 and 14 and Rogues at 10. Rogues gain Expertise at levels 1 and 6 and Bards at 3 and 10: two skills they are proficient in count their proficiency bonus twice. The Level up! panel lists what each level gave.

Rests

You have one Hit Die per level. Use a lit campfire with an empty hand for a short rest: after about 50 seconds your Hit Dice heal you, one at a time, until you are at full health or out of them. Getting hurt, attacking, leaving the fire or a monster coming near breaks the rest. Sleeping through the night heals you fully and gives all your Hit Dice back.

For pack makers and mod developers

Skills, species, backgrounds, classes, traits, mob scores, bonus sources and check triggers are datapack JSON. Mobs without a profile, modded ones included, get scores from their attributes. /checks check rolls a check for a datapack function and reports the result. Other mods read scores and roll checks through ChecksApi.
