About this project

What does Halite add?

Halite

Halite is a rendering engine for Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 on Babric + StationAPI, built on the ideas (and part of the code) of Sodium. It replaces the vanilla terrain renderer and speeds up the rest of the frame where Beta wastes time.

Typical results: several times the vanilla frame rate. On a phone with an Adreno 735 GPU (MojoLauncher) a tester went from ~70 FPS without Halite to ~300 FPS with it, at a 32 chunk render distance.

Features

  • Occlusion culling: chunks hidden behind terrain (caves under your feet, mountains) are never drawn.
  • Multi-threaded chunk building: chunks are meshed on background threads, so loading terrain no longer stutters the game.
  • Batched rendering: chunk geometry lives in compact (16-byte) vertex buffers grouped into regions, so whole groups of chunks are drawn with one call. That's 5-6x fewer draw calls than without regions.
  • Render distance up to 32 chunks, with fog that follows it.
  • Entity, block entity and particle culling: things you can't see are skipped.
  • Translucency sorting for water.
  • Faster clouds and animated textures only while visible (water, lava, fire, portals).
  • Lower memory use at startup.
  • A settings screen with a description for every option: Options → Video Settings → Halite Settings…

Compatibility

  • Requires StationAPI (2.0.0-alpha.6.4 or newer).
  • Blocks are still drawn by the regular vanilla/StationAPI block renderers, so modded blocks and block models keep working.
  • Works on old and weak hardware and on MojoLauncher (gl4es and similar): only OpenGL 1.5-level features are used, with a fallback for drivers without buffer objects.
  • Not compatible with other mods that replace the chunk renderer.

If something renders wrong, open the settings and turn off Async Chunk Builds, Animate Visible Only or VBOs to narrow it down, then report it on the issue tracker with your latest.log.
