About this project

What does Better Keybinds add?

Description

Find the action you need and bind it the way you play. Better Keybinds replaces Options > Controls > Key Binds with a searchable screen that keeps Minecraft's real actions and adds a second input to each one.

  • Primary and Secondary bindings: Assign two independent inputs to the same action while keeping its existing primary binding.
  • Search and filters: Search action names, assigned keys, categories and mod owners. Review conflicts, unbound actions and available inputs.
  • Keyboard and mouse diagrams: Browse inputs visually, including mouse buttons and wheel up/down.
  • Modifier chords: Use independent modifiers for primary and secondary inputs.
  • Undo and reset: Clear or restore a selected slot without discarding the other binding.
  • Native input behavior: Retain hold, release, toggle and GUI/game conflict contexts. Mapping both slots to the same key does not double-fire the action.
  • The existing presentation: Keep the original themed layout, fonts, colors and diagrams, with selected fonts working alongside supported menu mods.

Better Keybinds is independent of Tensura and menu mods. It adds no gameplay content or server protocol.

Installation and Compatibility

  • Minecraft: 1.21.1.
  • Loader: NeoForge 21.1 series; tested on 21.1.250.
  • Java: 21.
  • Install on: The client only. Servers do not need this mod.
  • Required mods: None beyond Minecraft and NeoForge.

Existing Bindings and Settings

Primary bindings stay in options.txt. Secondary bindings use config/better-keybinds.json. On first use, supported legacy secondary-binding files are copied without deleting the originals. Unknown action entries are retained, existing new settings win, and malformed files are preserved for recovery.

Presentation settings and the enable switch live in config/better_keybinds-client.toml. Relevant preferences migrate from the previous menu config when the new file does not exist.
