Requirements

⚠ Forge 1.20.1 (47.3.10 or newer). No other mods required. Install on the server too for the full feature set.

Every hit leaves a mark.

Visceral makes every fight physical. Bodies fall as real ragdolls, blades cut exactly where they land, and the wounded keep fighting with what they have left.

Features

Combat

Visceral gives every hit weight, aim and consequences. Where you hit, what you hit with and how big the target is all change what happens.

How a hit feels:

  • Hit-stop: Heavy blows freeze the body for a split second, and your camera kicks toward the hit (and back off armour)
  • Hit reactions: The part you hit rocks, scaled by the damage and by the mob's weight
  • Weight by size: A pistol barely rocks a ravager but sends a chicken flying
  • Knockdowns: Big hits floor a mob; hit it while it lies there, then watch it get back up where it fell
  • High falls: Mobs and players are floored when they land, not in mid-air
  • Hurt stances: A body hit makes it hunch, a head hit makes it sway, a hurt leg limps, a hurt arm hangs

Where and how you hit:

  • Cuts follow the weapon: 14 kinds of weapon slice, chop, stab or bruise
  • Tier sets the depth: Wood and stone stay shallow; diamond and netherite crits sever. Sharpness counts too
  • Headshots: Head, torso and limbs take damage differently, and a brain shot kills outright
  • Bleeding: Wounds keep bleeding, and a bleed-out kill counts as yours
  • Disarms: A hard hit to the hand or forearm knocks the weapon away

The wounded fight on:

  • Lose a leg: A two-legged mob that loses a leg crawls on as a living ragdoll
  • Cut short: A leg cut off at the shin or foot makes it hobble
  • Crushed: A big blast or a crushing blow to the body cripples it for a while
  • Lose an arm: One arm hits for half damage; with none, no melee at all

Armour that takes the hit:

  • Every material deflects its own way: Leather, iron, diamond and netherite
  • Wears through: Repeated hits on one spot wear a hole, and the hole stays on the item
  • Open face: A blow through a helmet's open face lands as if bareheaded
  • Knocked off: Helmets fly off, and a huge blow breaks a piece apart
  • Anvil repair: Fix the holes at an anvil

And more:

  • Grab living mobs: With Strength I take them down, with Strength II throw them
  • Kill moment: Optional slow motion and letterbox on your headshot kills
  • 57 sound events: Bone, metal, slime and flesh each sound their own way, with subtitles

Blood & gore

Wounds are carved into the body one pixel at a time, and the blood goes wherever it would really go.

Wounds:

  • Pixel wounds: Bullets make an entry hole and a bigger exit, blades cut, blunt weapons dent. Holes fill back in as a mob heals
  • Dismemberment: Limbs come off or dangle by a strip, and a cut arm drops its weapon. In first person you see your own stump
  • Cut in two: A blow worth the mob's full health halves it along the swing
  • Gibs: Blasts, long falls and anvils burst bodies into chunks that bounce by material

Blood:

  • Matched to the block: Stains follow the block's own pixels
  • Pools and runs: Blood spreads, runs down walls and stairs, and drips from ceilings
  • Every surface its own way: Glass, metal and ice bead it; dirt soaks it in; snow turns pink
  • On bodies: Spatter lands on bodies nearby and runs down from the wound
  • Trails: Dragged corpses leave smears, and you leave bloody footprints
  • On your screen: Get close and some of it lands on you
  • In water: Spots drift downstream on the surface while heavier bits sink
  • Rain and fire: Rain thins stains and runs pools over ledges; lava and fire hiss them away

Every creature its own way:

  • 13 creature materials: Green creepers, purple endermen, bone chips from skeletons, sparks from golems
  • Slimes: Squish, burst into goo and split
  • Skeletons and spiders: Skeletons fall apart, spiders lose legs
  • Endermen: Vanish one part at a time

Fire, ice and time:

  • Burns: Bodies char and can burn to the bone; Fire Aspect and flaming arrows sear wounds shut
  • Frozen statues: A mob that dies in powder snow becomes a frosty statue that shatters
  • Corpses age: They stiffen, grey, draw flies and sink into the ground

Ragdolls

Almost every mob, vanilla or modded, dies as a real physics ragdoll. No white poof.

How bodies fall:

  • Death throes: Bodies stagger along the blow, crumple, then twitch
  • Bodies pile up: They rest on stairs, slabs, fences and each other
  • Water and lava: Bodies float face down and splash; lava holds them differently
  • Arrows stick: Arrows, tridents and modded spears stay in the body, and a kill against a wall pins it there
  • Bullets jolt: A shot moves the part it hits, not the whole body

Handling bodies:

  • Drag and throw: Grab a body by any part, charge up and throw it
  • You see the grab: Your arm and grip in first person; other players see it in third person
  • Leads: Tie a body to drag it or hang it from a fence, where it won't rot
  • Push through: Walking or riding through corpses shoves them aside

In multiplayer (new):

  • Shared bodies: Every player sees the same body and the same wounds
  • Late arrivals: Players who join later find the same corpses
  • Server rules: The server sets how long bodies stay and how they move

Death & injuries

Your own death plays out in first person, and every injury changes how you play.

When you die:

  • Eyes close: You fall as a ragdoll and watch through your body's eyes as they close, then the options fade in
  • Or the death camera: Turn the eyes off and the view circles your body instead
  • Your body keeps your things: Nothing scatters; right-click your body to search it, or Take all. Chat tells you where it is
  • Loot bag: When the body is gone a bag stays, 20 minutes for players by default
  • Grave mods: If you use one, it takes over

Downed, not dead:

  • Dying state: On in multiplayer, and an option in single player
  • Revive: A Life Serum, Adrenaline or a Healing potion brings you back patched up, with your lost limbs still lost
  • Bleed-out timer: Optional, off by default
  • Who can drag you: Anyone, only with PvP on, or nobody; a downed PvP opponent can be roped

Injuries:

  • Lost arm: Drops what it held and can't use items
  • Lost legs: Hobble on one, crawl on your arms with none
  • Body panel: See which of your limbs are hurt, bleeding or gone, with a colour-blind option
  • Mobs come back too: A Healing potion or Life Serum revives a corpse that still has its head

Syringes & gear

18 syringes that work on mobs, players and corpses, plus a sleep kit and a gauntlet.

Each base syringe is an empty syringe and one ingredient:

  • Life Serum (glistering melon and golden apple): A full heal; raises a corpse that has its head
  • Mending (ghast tear): Regrows limbs and closes holes; makes a corpse whole and stops it rotting
  • Coagulant (slime ball): Stops bleeding
  • Adrenaline (sugar): Speed and Haste for 30 seconds, gets a downed body up, then a crash
  • Painkiller (poppy): No limp or stagger, and no knockdowns for 2 minutes
  • Knockout (phantom membrane): A limp, living ragdoll for 15 seconds
  • Ultra Strength (blaze powder): Strength and Resistance for a minute
  • Acid (fermented spider eye): Eats pits into the body and melts a corpse to a puddle
  • Flesh-eater (spider eye): Eats it down to a skeleton
  • Bone-eater (bone meal): Folds it up, boneless
  • Necrosis (poisonous potato): Withers the living; a corpse rots in seconds, then the bones crumble
  • Reanimation (rotten flesh): A corpse with its head rises as a zombie; villagers, piglins and players turn
  • Joint Lock (packed ice): Frozen for 15 seconds; a corpse becomes a statue
  • Instant Death (wither rose): Kills; bosses only lose 10%

Mix two syringes for two of something stronger:

  • Osteomorphosis (Acid + Mending): A zombie or villager becomes a skeleton, a piglin a wither skeleton
  • Immortality (Life + Mending): You can't die for a minute
  • Berserk (Adrenaline + Ultra Strength): A frenzy, then it takes its toll
  • Cure (Life + Reanimation): Turns a zombie villager back into a villager

Using them, and the gear:

  • Hold to inject: One second to inject; sneak to use a harmful one on yourself
  • Clear labels: A skull on lethal ones, a cross on healing ones, and every tooltip says what it's made with
  • 7 advancements: Four of them teach the mix recipes
  • Sleep kit: A blowgun, sleeping darts and arrows and a tincture make a target drowsy, then asleep for 12 seconds
  • Shockwave Gauntlet: Throws everything in a cone, corpses included; sneak and use to pick from 5 strengths

Compatibility

Compatibility

Built for modpacks: Visceral reads modded mobs and weapons by itself, with no setup.

Smart detection:

  • Modded weapons: Sorted into slice, chop, stab or bruise from the item's name, tags, damage, speed and reach, and its Better Combat or Epic Fight category
  • Modded mobs: Head, body, limbs, tail and wings found by themselves, with each creature's material and blood
  • Huge damage, tamed: A 500-damage weapon hits about 2.4 times as hard as a 10-damage one, not 50 times
  • Modded death animations: Replaced by the ragdoll, so the two never fight
  • Simple fallback: A model it can't read gets a simple body; the armour stand and ender dragon die their own way

Mobs and weapons screen (press K):

  • See how each was read: A status for every mob, and a filter that says why one is unsupported
  • Change it: Edit each mob's weight and material, or let it keep its own death animation
  • Share it: Export and import presets for your modpack

Works with:

  • Epic Fight: Cuts follow the animated blade, and its stuns stop on downed mobs
  • Better Combat: Cuts follow the real attack, and sweeps cut corpses
  • TaCZ and MrCrayfish's Gun Mod: Headshots, and bullets that wound where they land
  • GeckoLib and Citadel: Models read, Alex's Mobs and Ice and Fire included
  • More gun mods recognised: Point Blank, JEG and weaponlib
  • Grave mods: 6 recognised; player bodies step aside when one is installed
  • Data and resource packs: Set creature materials and add ragdoll profiles
  • Shaders (Oculus): Work, though bodies may not cast shader shadows

Servers and multiplayer:

  • Client-only: Works with fewer features
  • On a server: Every player needs it too; anyone without it is told clearly
  • Cheat-proof: The server checks damage, armour, limbs and drags
  • Free for modpacks: Include it in any pack on CurseForge or Modrinth

Hitscan-only gun mods (no bullet entity, such as Point Blank) can't hit corpses yet.

FAQ

Q: Does it need to be on the server?

No. It works client-only with fewer features. Install it on the server too for the full set.

Q: Can I use it in my modpack?

Yes, in any modpack hosted on CurseForge or Modrinth. Please don't rehost the jar anywhere else.

Q: Is it too gory for my videos?

Turn on Streamer Safe for a toned-down look, or Piñata for candy instead of blood. Monetised videos are fine.

Q: Will it work with my modded mobs and weapons?

Most likely. Visceral detects them by itself, and the Mobs and weapons screen (press K) shows how each one was read.

Q: Fabric or NeoForge?

Forge 1.20.1 only for now.
