CurseForge · Minecraft mod
TrailWright
This mod adds gradual, ragged footpaths. Walk a route often and grass wears to dirt, and coarse dirt, turning to mud near water.

About this project
What does TrailWright add?
TrailWright
Walk the same way often enough and the ground remembers.
TrailWright wears trails into the ground where players, mounts, and mobs actually step. Grass becomes dirt, then coarse dirt, or mud near water. It happens gradually and unevenly, so the routes you really use turn into ragged, natural-looking trails, while a single crossing leaves nothing behind.

Works with every resource pack
TrailWright adds no blocks, items, or textures. Worn ground is ordinary vanilla dirt, coarse dirt, mud, and netherrack, or the matching blocks from a supported biome mod. Your resource pack already covers every block you will see, so trails match it with no patch needed. Because it registers nothing, TrailWright drops into existing modpacks and worlds, and can be removed cleanly.
Features
- Only real footsteps count. Jumping over a block, gliding, standing still, or sneaking leaves no mark. Sprinting wears faster.
- Trails with character. Neighboring blocks wear at different rates, so edges come out ragged. Ground near water turns to mud instead of coarse dirt.
- Trodden grass. Tall grass gets knocked down to short grass, then trampled away, before the ground under it wears. Flowers are left alone.
- Nether trails. Crimson and warped nylium wear down to netherrack.
- Horse trails. Ridden mounts wear the ground too.
- Animal paths, not barren pens. Mobs wear grass to dirt but never further, so pastures thin out without dying. Chickens, rabbits, bees, and other small mobs leave no mark.
- Heals naturally. Unused trails fade, vanilla grass spreads back over dirt, and planting flowers or grass, bone meal, or a brush restores worn ground.
- Paths stay yours. Wear never makes dirt paths; that is still a shovel's job.
- Fully data-driven. Every progression is a small JSON rule. Change one by dropping a file in
config/trailwright/rules/and running/reload, no data pack needed, or ship rules in a data pack or mod. - Customizable. Mod authors and modpack creators can ship rules in a data pack or in their mod's data/<namespace>/wear_rules/ folder: trails for their own blocks, or new behavior for vanilla ones. TrailWright's tags take additions the same way, such as blocks that never wear (#trailwright:unwearable) or mobs that leave no mark (#trailwright:light_footed). A rule for a block from a mod that is not installed is skipped quietly, so one pack can cover optional mods. Players' own rules in the config folder still win.
- Mod support out of the box for Biomes O' Plenty, Regions Unexplored, Oh The Biomes We've Gone, and Nature's Spirit.
Installation
- Fabric 1.20.1: TrailWright, and Fabric API.
- Forge 1.20.1: the same TrailWright and Stope jars, plus Sinytra Connector and Forgified Fabric API. Tested on Forge 47.4.28 with Connector 1.0.0-beta.49.
- Optional: Mod Menu (Fabric) adds an in-game settings screen.
TrailWright runs on the server. Players do not need it to join. With TrailWright on their client too, ops get a wear readout on the F3 screen.
Configuration
config/trailwright/trailwright.json: overall speed (wearMultiplier), sprinting and mob rates, whether mounts and mobs count, decay, and whether themobGriefinggamerule stops mob wear. With Mod Menu installed (optional), these settings have an in-game screen too; changes apply at once in worlds you host.config/trailwright/rules/: your own wear rules. The player guide, with copy-paste examples, is written toconfig/trailwright/RULES.mdwhen the game starts.
Modpacks
You're welcome to include TrailWright in your modpack. No need to ask, as long as:
- the pack is distributed on Modrinth or CurseForge, and references this project page rather than bundling the jar wherever the platform allows;
- the jar is unmodified;
- the pack's page credits TrailWright and links here; and
- the pack is free.
For anything outside these terms, such as a paid pack, another platform, or a modified jar, email KillenCraft@pm.me.
Servers, videos, streams, and reviews are fine too, including monetized ones.
