About this project

What does The Almanac: Illuminated add?

The Almanac
ILLUMINATED
Your modlist, explained by the people who wrote it

Press Alt+J and a bound book comes out into your hands. It holds a chapter for every mod you have loaded, and nothing at all for the ones you do not. The pages turn, the tabs are paper slips you can see, and you can leave a scrap in it to keep your place.

Every chapter is written by whoever knows that mod best, in plain JSON, with no code and no dependency on this mod's internals. The Almanac only binds them together and hands you the right ones.

The book in your hands

It reads as a bound object: a modelled cover and spine, tilted pages, slips down the edges for the tabs, and a sheet that turns when you page. It draws out when you open it and stows when you close it.

Underneath it is one book with one layout. The bound view presents the same page the flat view does, so nothing is drawn twice and the two can never drift apart.

The flat page is also the safety net. Drawing the book needs an offscreen render pass; if a machine will not give us one, the Almanac says so once and reads flat for the rest of the session. You lose the tilt and nothing else.
What the book holds

Chapters
thumb-indexed, A to Z
The guides themselves, one per mod. A pack can lift the ones that matter into a named band above the alphabet.
Crops
what grows where you live
Every growable crop the game and your mods know about, with the planting window for your own latitude rather than a generic table.
Weather
the year ahead
The shape of the coming year at your homestead, in words rather than numbers.
Journal
a notebook that saves itself
Somewhere to write down the coordinates you will otherwise forget.
Bookmarks
eight, and you can see them
Pin a page with the paper tag at the corner. Pinned pages hang as scraps along the top edge; click one and you are there.

For those who write mods

A chapter is one JSON file in assets/yourmod/almanac/guides/. The Almanac finds it, and it appears only for players who have your mod. You never reference this mod or compile against it.

i.  Gate on your modid, so your chapter arrives with your mod and leaves with it.

ii.  Reveal as it is earned. A section, or a whole chapter, can stay dark until the player has done the thing. You report the key; the book does the hiding.

iii.  Set a page properly. Headings, drop caps, callouts, ordered steps, tables, figures, checklists, dividers, and recipe grids drawn live from the real registry.

iv.  Link into it from anywhere. almanac://chapter/yourmod:yourchapter resolves wherever rich text renders, chat included.

v.  Translate it. Language keys are accepted anywhere a string is.

vi.  Or do not hand-write it at all. There is an editor, below.

<!-- the plate: rules above and below, centered, the way a printed notice sits on a page -->
Write one in your browser
Nothing to install and nothing to build. It writes the JSON, lays out the spread as the book will,
tells you when a field is wrong, and opens a guide you already ship so you can edit it.
The format is specified in docs/SCHEMA.md with a JSON schema beside it, so a code editor can check your work as you type. It is open for comment and not frozen. If you are writing a chapter and something is awkward, say so now rather than after it sets.
Reads alongside

The Almanac: Trades, Callings & Mastery Adds its Callings and Mastery chapters, and a live progression tab.
Foragers Gamble The Crops tab follows what your character has actually learned, not what merely exists.
Any mod at all One JSON file and no code is the whole cost of shipping a chapter.

The state of it

The book works and is in daily use, and the format is settled enough to write against. It is still young: chapters, tabs and the page furniture will keep growing. Feedback from anyone authoring a guide is worth more to me right now than anything else.

Colophon
The open-book frame art, the page-flip frames and the page-turn sounds are from Wanderer's Sketchbook by JeanPierre,
used with the author's blanket permission for modders.
Lora and Almendra ship with the game. Josefin Sans and Odibee Sans are bundled under the SIL Open Font License.
