About this project

What does kris-patch-materialneeds add?

A small content-only fix that brings back Aged Wood and Very Aged Wood after the Material Needs 2.0.0 update: the blocks themselves, plus the aged-wood textures and names that went missing on items from other mods.

What's new in 1.3.1

  • Aged doors are no longer question marks. This is the big one. The patch brings back aged and very aged versions of vanilla's doors, but 1.2.5 never shipped the two door textures, so every one of them rendered as a red question mark — most visibly on trader and Better Ruins buildings. Fixed. Doors already placed in your world repair themselves the moment you update, because pictures are looked up fresh each launch and are not stored in your save.
  • Aged wooden paths exist again. The patch shipped path textures for a block it was also switching off, so neither worked. The block is back and uses them.
  • Better Ruins fix. Two of its schematic recipes tried to build support beams out of aged wood, which this patch does not create, so those recipes were being dropped. Better Ruins is optional; nothing happens if you do not have it.

What's new in 1.3.0

This release is mostly about mistakes in this patch, not in Material Needs. If you are on 1.2.5, please update.

  • The roofing fix now works. Its recipe numbers were measured on a slightly different build of the game and landed on the wrong recipes in 1.22.6 — it was blocking aged and very aged logs from making sod roofing, while leaving the recipes it was meant to fix untouched. Corrected and verified against 1.22.6.
  • Six wrong names removed. The patch was renaming vanilla's own aged planks, boards, stairs, slabs and fences to "Very aged". Those now show their normal game names again.
  • Two more mods covered. More Floors' parquet planks and Can's Jewelry's jeweller's bench and grinder no longer lose their recipes when this patch is installed. Both are optional, nothing happens if you do not have them.

What it fixes

Material Needs adds aged-looking wood, the "Aged" and "Very Aged" planks, doors, fences, logs, trapdoors, roofing, crates and so on. The 2.0.0 update reworked those materials, and several things broke along the way:

  • The aged wood blocks stopped existing. The update left out the one piece that actually creates them, so anything you built with aged wood showed up as unknown blocks and you could not craft new aged wood.
  • Aged-wood textures went missing on other mods. The update renamed the two aged wood types. Lots of mods add wooden items in every wood type (Shipwright, Ancient Tools, Cartwrights Caravan, Tailor's Delight, Aldi's Classes) and their aged items suddenly showed the pink-and-black "missing texture" look, because the textures they expect were left behind under the old names or never filled in.
  • Aged blocks from other mods had no names. Aldi's Classes planks, RP Voice Chat's telephones and speakers, and Waymarkers' buoys showed a line of raw code instead of a name in their Aged and Very Aged versions, because those blocks only exist thanks to this patch and their own mods never wrote names for them. If one of those mods adds its own name later, theirs is used and this patch steps aside automatically.
  • The Aged log was being held back. It now registers like the rest of the tier, which clears 1344 startup warnings about Eco Machina's aged tapered logs having nothing to drop. Its textures were always there, the block simply was not allowed to exist.
  • Aldi's Classes aged wood is filled in. Its decorative leaves no longer try to grow on aged wood (dead wood has no foliage, and no aged leaf texture exists anywhere), and its aligned, herringbone and thin planks now have proper Aged and Very Aged textures.

Do you need it?

Install it if your server runs Material Needs 2.0.0 or newer, your world already existed before you updated, and your aged or very aged wood is broken: unknown blocks, aged wood that cannot be crafted, or aged wooden items from other mods showing missing textures.

Two cases where you should NOT install it

  • A brand-new world. Material Needs 2.0.0's aged-wood conversion only rewrites codes that are already saved in a world, so on a world generated after the update it never runs and nothing is broken to begin with. This patch would only add two extra wood types to the game's shared wood list, which every other mod's wooden blocks inherit, for no benefit. Start the world first, and only add this if aged wood actually breaks.
  • Material Needs 1.1.16 or older. Those versions still add the two wood types themselves. Installing this alongside them adds each type to the game's wood list twice, and the game then creates two of every wood-typed block. This is permanent. A world records its block list once, when it is created, and never reuses or retires an entry. Only one of each duplicated pair can work; the other becomes a dead entry that shows a question mark and says "Unknown block ID" forever, including inside chiselled blocks. Removing the patch afterwards does not undo it, and neither does any later fix — that is why people report "we fix it, it gets a new id, and it comes straight back". Update Material Needs, or leave this patch out.

How to install

  1. Put the mod file in your server's Mods folder.
  2. Restart the server.

No configuration needed.

Please note: this needs to go in your server's Mods folder. It is sent to players automatically like any other content mod. Do not put it in the ModsByServer folder on a player's computer, because that folder is an automatic download from the server, so a copy placed there just gets overwritten and will not fix anything.

Requirements

  • Vintage Story 1.22 or newer
  • Material Needs 2.0.0, the mod this fixes. The patch depends on it being present; if Material Needs is not installed, the patch simply does not load.
  • The other mods it helps (Shipwright, Ancient Tools, Cartwrights Caravan, Tailor's Delight, Aldi's Classes, RP Voice Chat, Waymarkers, Eco Machina) are optional. The patch works with any of them, all of them, or none. Anything not installed just sits unused and causes no error.

Good to know

  • Removing it: read this first. The patch never writes anything to your save file itself. What it does is make the aged wood blocks exist again and a world stores the blocks you place.
    • If you install it, look at your old aged wood, and take it back out again, you are simply back where you started. Nothing is lost.
    • If you build with aged wood while it is installed and then remove it, that new aged wood turns into unknown blocks — the same problem this patch was made to fix.
    • The clean exit is a Material Needs release that registers the two wood types again itself. Because it would use the same block names, you can swap this patch out for that update with nothing lost. That is the upstream fix that makes this mod obsolete: Material Needs restoring darkaged and lightaged to the game's shared wood list, which its 2.0.0 update dropped while keeping the conversion that points at them. Once that ships, delete this.
  • It does not change how anything looks on purpose, or how anything works. It only puts back what the update dropped.
  • Aged wood you already built should come back on its own once the patch is in place, including aged wood sitting in chests and aged wood inside chiselled blocks.
  • Still seeing question marks after installing? That is a bug in this patch, not damage to your world. It means the patch brought a block back but did not ship its picture. Nothing is lost and nothing needs repairing — please report it with the name of the block (point at it and the name shows on screen) and I will add the missing art. This is exactly what happened to aged doors in 1.2.5, fixed in 1.3.1.
  • The one case this patch genuinely cannot fix is a block that says "Unknown block ID" followed by a number, with completely clean log files. That means the world ended up with two internal ids sharing one block name, which no mod can undo from the outside. It is rare and it is not caused by installing this. Say so when you report it, and do not start editing your save.
  • A few of the "Aged" (lighter) textures had no light-coloured original to copy, so they are lightened versions of the "Very Aged" ones. They look close, not pixel-perfect.
  • This only fixes aged wood. Flowers and the Geology rocks were not broken by the update, so they are left alone. Waymarkers' missing buoy textures are a separate, unrelated problem, a different mod and not aged wood.

Under the hood, for the curious

The 2.0.0 update renamed its wood tiers (Aged and Very Aged) and moved them into the game's own wood list, but removed the small file that adds them to that list, so all the aged-wood blocks it still refers to no longer existed. This patch re-adds those two wood tiers so every aged block comes back, keeps them out of a handful of vanilla recipes so no duplicate recipes appear, and ships the game-domain aged-wood textures the rename left missing, plus the couple that Shipwright and Aldi's Classes still expect under the new names. The extra textures are plain image files, so they only apply where a matching mod is installed and never cause an error otherwise.

It is based on the community "Aged Wood Restore" mod, but ships only settings and image files, no program code, so it cannot crash the server the way the original sometimes did. It also corrects a recipe-targeting mistake so it lines up with Vintage Story 1.22.
