About this project
What does Minimally Invasive Performance Tweaks add?
Minimally Invasive Performance Tweaks is a client-side FPS governor that quietly trades visual fidelity for frame rate — only while you actually need it,
and always gradually enough that you barely notice it happening.
Unlike static "low spec" configs, nothing here is permanent: when your FPS drops below a configurable threshold, the mod starts easing down the cheapest-invisible things first.
When your FPS recovers and stays recovered, everything slowly comes back. Your own settings are never overwritten — they are remembered and restored, even after a crash.
What it does when FPS drops
- Dynamic resolution — lowers the render scale stepwise (e.g. 100% → 75% → 50%) on high-resolution displays, steps back up once FPS stabilize.
Height-gated so it only engages where the visual cost is barely visible (4K+ by default). - Dynamic view distance — shrinks the chunk radius under sustained load and grows it back with hysteresis, cooldowns and backoff so it never oscillates.
- Shadows, three ways — the shadow draw distance glides down in small steps (fades, not pops), shadow map updates are adaptively throttled while you move,
and in true emergencies a deeper quality cut engages below its own separate FPS floor. - Leaves & vegetation thinning — distant foliage is culled by a stable per-position pattern (no flicker), with an automatic extra boost below a severe-FPS threshold.
- Grass & small plants — render/shadow distance caps with a dithered per-pixel dissolve, so the carpet thins out instead of snapping off.
- Particles, clouds, LOD, chiseled blocks — spawn scaling under emitter pressure, cloud grid distance caps with soft edges, optional FPS-driven LOD bias, and an LOD split for microblocks.
Design principles
- Gradual, never sudden. Every change is dwell-gated, rate-limited and hysteresis-controlled — the mod's core job is to avoid the pop-in and oscillation that most dynamic-quality systems cause.
- Under-cover awareness. Forests and caves are detected so the governor doesn't panic-react to the temporary FPS recovery that tree cover causes.
- Crash-safe. If the game dies mid-reduction, pending restores are replayed next session — your settings are never left stuck.
- Client-side only. No server needed, no world changes, safe to add/remove anytime.
- Fully configurable. Every threshold, dwell, step size and feature toggle lives in
miptfc.json— tune it for a potato or a 144 Hz rig.
Default behavior is conservative: at 57+ FPS the mod does essentially nothing. It exists for the moments — dense forests, storms, particle-heavy fights — where a temporary,
invisible sacrifice beats a slideshow.
Designed with older hardware in mind, that struggles to stay at 60 fps. If you own a more powerful machine,
you may want to raise "DynamicMinFps", "DynamicMaxFps", "DynamicShadowDistanceRaiseMinFps" & "LowFpsViewDistanceRestoreMinFps".
Also recommended: Disable VSync in-game or play in windowed / "maximized borderless" mode to gain more frames. And close all other apps such as your browser.
Don't like far chunks dynamically loading/ unloading? Set "LowFpsViewDistanceAutoRestore" to false, if you don't want the mod to auto-change view distance.
