About this project

What does Zippy's Moose Tweaks add?

Moose are very big.  They are one of the largest land mammals currently in existence. Exceptional specimens can weigh upwards of 600kg, with the average being around 400kg.  At that weight, a single adult male moose can provide enough meat for one person to live off -- if they ate nothing else -- for a couple of months.  It seems a bit stingy for the game to reward a player with an average of only 8 to 12 red-meat, or the equivalent of about 2 to 3 days food. There are, however, only 9 days in a Vintage Story month, so 3 days in game is the equivalent of about 10 days in real life, but even so, this seems a bit stingy.  Add to this the fact that a male moose does the same amout of damage per attack as a brown bear.  This makes hunting them a non-trivial task (especially if, like me, you aren't a twitchy-fingered spazz-monkey with a high-dpi mouse).

Considering the inherent risk in hunting them, especially in the early game when only flint tools and basic armour are available, I think moose should be more rewarding, so this little mod tweaks their meat and fat drops.  I have coded separate parameters for males and females, as bull moose in real life are significantly heavier than the cows.  Using this mod, under ideal conditions male moose can now drop as many as 35 meat and 6 fat, with the average being closer to 27 meat and 4 fat.  Females can provide as much as 26 meat and 3 fat, with the average being closer to 18 meat and 2 fat.  Immature moose of either sex will now drop as many as 7 meat, with the average being closer to 3 (because even a baby moose is a sizeable creature).  While this still isn't anywhere near what a real life haul would be, one large and healthy male moose can now provide enough meat to feed a single player for up to 9 days, or 1 in-game month.  I think this is an acceptable reward for the effort of hunting them.

Additionally, while perusing the game assets I noticed that moose are prevented from spawning in snow any deeper than "level 1", or one eighth of a block deep.  I couldn't see any reason why this should be the case, so this mod changes that rule to allow them to spawn in snow of any depth. This should, hopefully, result in them spawning just as often in winter as they do in summer.
