Simple Weight Mod

Adds physical weight to items and blocks. Carrying too much slows you down — or stops you completely. Weights can be defined explicitly, with wildcard rules, or auto-generated by the built-in categorizer. Config file: ModConfig/weightmod.json Defining weight

Is Simple Weight Mod required on the client, server, or both?

It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional.

About this project

What does Simple Weight Mod add?

Adds physical weight to items and blocks. Carrying too much slows you down — or stops you completely. Weights can be defined explicitly, with wildcard rules, or auto-generated by the built-in categorizer.

Config file: ModConfig/weightmod.json

Defining weights

WEIGHT_RULES — wildcard rule list

Each rule has three fields: Pattern, Weight, and Kind ("item", "block", or "bonus"). Rules are evaluated in order; the first match wins.

Pattern syntax:

  • game:ingot-copper  — exact
  • game:ore-*  — prefix
  • *-bountiful  — suffix
  • *ore*  — contains
{ "Pattern": "game:crystalizedore-poor-*", "Weight": 43,   "Kind": "item" }
{ "Pattern": "*-bountiful-hematite-*",     "Weight": 104,  "Kind": "item" }
{ "Pattern": "game:backpack",              "Weight": 2000, "Kind": "bonus" }

Kind: "bonus" means the item adds carry capacity (backpacks, baskets, mining bags) instead of weighing the player down.

Legacy dictionaries (still supported)

  • WEIGHTS_FOR_ITEMS / WEIGHTS_FOR_BLOCKS — item or block code → weight. Processed after WEIGHT_RULES.
  • WEIGHTS_BONUS_ITEMS — bonus-carry items (backpacks, clothing).

Auto-categorizer (Weight Oracle)

Out of the box WEIGHT_RULES already ships with curated values for vanilla ores, ingots, metal plates and bonus carriers (backpacks, baskets, sacks, mining bag). The oracle fills in everything that isn't covered — useful when you have modded items or just don't want to enumerate the whole game by hand.

Enable with USE_WEIGHT_ORACLE: true. On first launch the mod walks every item and block that has no weight yet, drops it into a broad bucket (tool, weapon, armor, ore, metal, wood/stone/metal/glass block, food, clothing, misc) and writes a weight into the config. Then it flips WEIGHT_ORACLE_DONE: true and stops.

The classification is intentionally coarse: oak, birch and maple planks land in the same bucket and get the same weight; granite and basalt do too. Shape adjustments are applied on top (stairs/slab ×0.5, wall ×0.8, fence/gate ×0.3, stackable ×0.8). For variant-specific weights, add a WEIGHT_RULES entry — rules are processed first and win over oracle output. Manually-defined values are never overwritten.

Tune the auto-generation with:

  • BASE_WEIGHTS_BY_CATEGORY — base weight per bucket.
  • MATERIAL_MULTIPLIERS — multiplier per material family (wood, stone, metal, cloth, leather, glass, gem).

Player settings

MAX_PLAYER_WEIGHT
Max weight at full health, no bonuses. Overloaded players can't move or jump.
WEIGH_PLAYER_THRESHOLD
Current/max ratio at which walk speed starts to drop (0 < value ≤ 1).
RATIO_MIN_MAX_WEIGHT_PLAYER_HEALTH
Floor for health-based capacity scaling. With 0.4, capacity never falls below MAX_PLAYER_WEIGHT × 0.4, even at minimum health.
ACCUM_TIME_WEIGHT_CHECK
Minimum seconds between weight recalculations. Skipped if health and inventories didn't change.
HOW_OFTEN_RECHECK
Full re-evaluation interval, in seconds.
PERCENT_MODIFIER_USED_ON_RAW_WEIGHT
If true, the percent stat modifier (weightmodweightbonus) applies to raw weight instead of the bonus.
CLASS_WEIGHT_BONUS
Per-class bonus capacity.
Example: commoner:0;hunter:500;malefactor:-500;clockmaker:-1000;blackguard:2000;tailor:-2000
INVENTORY_WEIGHT_PLAYER_SETTINGS
Per-inventory rules: which inventories count toward weight, and which slot ranges count as bonus carriers (e.g. backpack slots).

Elk (pack animal)

MAX_ELK_WEIGHT — capacity for ridable/loadable elks.

HUD

  • HUD_POSITION — anchor element (default saturationstatbar).
  • WEIGHT_HUD_X / WEIGHT_HUD_Y — HUD offset.
  • INFO_COLOR_WEIGHT / INFO_COLOR_WEIGHT_BONUS — tooltip text colors for weight and bonus values.

Admin commands

In-game tweaking without a server restart. All commands require the controlserver privilege. Every mutation auto-saves ModConfig/weightmod.json, re-applies all rules, and pushes the new values to online clients immediately.

/wm reload
Re-read the config file and re-apply weights to all collectibles and online players. Use after hand-editing the JSON.
/wm gethand
Show the code and current weightmod / weightbonusbags of the item in your active hotbar slot.
/wm sethand <weight>
Add/update a WEIGHT_RULE (Kind="item") with the exact code of the held item. Pass 0 to delete the item-rule for it.
/wm sethandbonus <weight>
Same as sethand but for Kind="bonus" (writes weightbonusbags). 0 deletes the bonus-rule.
/wm set <pattern> <weight>
Add/update a WEIGHT_RULE with an arbitrary pattern (wildcards supported — see syntax in Defining weights). New rules are inserted at the top of the list so they take priority over earlier wildcards.
/wm setbonus <pattern> <weight>
Same as set but Kind="bonus".
/wm clear <pattern>
Remove every WEIGHT_RULE whose Pattern exactly matches the argument (both item and bonus kinds).
/wm get <pattern>
List items and blocks that match the pattern with their current weight values. Capped at 50 results.

Typical tuning loop:

/wm gethand → code: game:ingot-copper | weightmod=89
/wm sethand 60 → added item rule: game:ingot-copper = 60
/wm get game:ingot-* → list all ingots with their values
/wm clear game:ingot-copper → wipe the rule

Note: changes to CLASS_WEIGHT_BONUS only take effect for newly-connecting players (the per-player class bonus is cached at join time). Client-side HUD settings (HUD_POSITION, WEIGHT_HUD_X/Y, colors) require a client reload — reloading the server config does not push them.

For mod authors

To apply your own buff/debuff to the player's carry capacity, add a value to entity.Stats["weightmodweightbonus"]. The mod calls GetBlended on it every time weight is calculated.
