About this project
What does Haven add?
This mod adds havens, which contain dispensers for everything the player needs to survive in the stone age, but not enough to thrive. This encourages the players to explore beyond the haven and progress beyond the stone age.
Initially players are expected to cautiously venture short distances from the haven, and quickly return at the first sight of danger. After they progress far enough in the game to build advanced weapons and armor, they are expected to build a base far from the haven, with the only reason to return the haven being to visit new players on the server.
Havens have dispenser blocks. These blocks look like their vanilla counterparts, except that the ripe/empty state is stored per player instead of global. They also ripen faster than their vanilla counterparts, but there are only a few of these dispensers within the haven. So if player A harvests stone from the stone dispenser, they have to wait 12 hours for it to ripen again. However, player B can still harvest it once in the meantime.
The following dispensers are generated in the haven:
- Branches (branches blocks in the tree)
- Stone (looks like a pile of stones)
- Blue clay (rare, looks like a pile of clay)
- Berry bush
- Cattails (in the pond)
In addition to the dispensers, the haven contains the spawn house, which is a source of light and a way for players to set their spawn point.
Players will not be attacked by mobs inside the resource zone (identified by the circle of raised ground) and plot zone of the haven.
After installing this mod, run "/haven create" to create a haven at the block selection. If necessary, run "/haven undo" to undo the land modifications followed by "/haven unregister" to remove the land protection. If you don't like the auto generated haven, you can create your own haven in creative mode from the dispenser blocks, then run "/haven register" to stop mobs from attacking the player in it and prevent modifications to the haven (outside of creative mode).
To claim a plot, while holding a stick or stone, look at an unclaimed plot right outside the resource zone (circle of raised ground). The unclaimed plots are ones without a chest. If a plot exists at that location, the ground will be highlighted. Right click to choose that plot. The benefit of having a plot on the haven is that it is protected from mob attacks, just like the resource zone. You also get a starter chest. There are only a few blocks in the plot, but it's perfect for knapping some stone tools before venturing out. If you change your mind, the plot can be relinquished with "/haven unclaim".
Like most of my mods, there is a design doc with more details.
Future roadmap:
- Automatic haven generation at world generation
- A more interactive way to claim plots.
It is safe to add this mod to a new or existing world. If you remove the mod from a world, then the dispenser blocks will show up as question marks. You can simply break them.
