About this project
What does Food Balance Mod add?
One of the things that really bugs me about vintage story is the balancing of many mid - late game food products. Especially on harder difficulties the game really tries to make everything beyond meat stews and pies absolute garbage.
Take, for example, brandy. Brandy takes quite a lot to make in vanilla. You need to be roughly bronze age before you can even try to make it (copper anvil and cassiterite for solder), you need to take the time to locate lead and 14 copper ingots worth of ore just to make the distillery. Doing all this on standard settings is most likely going to take 2 - 3 days of time at least along with the food reserves to attempt such a project. You then need to turn your juice into wine and then your wine into hard liquor. What you get for all this effort? A food item that has a functionally infinite shelf life, a 96.875% reduction in satiety from the base food and an undesirable (if immersive) side effect. In order to get enough brandy to fill your hunger bar a single time, you would need to harvest 150 berry bushes. That's an entire field of bushes, for slightly less satiety than you get from four pieces of red meat.
Obviously chugging brandy for food isn't exactly realistic, and there should still be a satiety cost in exchange for the increased shelf life. That's why I made this mod. It balances out wine and brandy, jam, berries in general, scrambled eggs and cheese.
- Berries are slightly less effective in meals 120 -> 100
- Fruit juice is unchanged and is a net 21.88% loss from raw berry form / 37.5% loss compared to using the berries in a meal
- Wine now reduces the volume of the input by 20% which is effectively the same percent lost in satiety and slightly buffed from our current 25% decrease in satiety
- Brandy is now fermented across the board at 1:10 and has a much higher satiety of 1500 per liter or an effective 53% loss in satiety from juice and a 63% loss compared to meals
- Aqua Vitae is also made at the same ratio of 1:2 and has a much higher satiety of 2200 or an effective 66% loss / 73% loss
- These changes keep juice and berries relevant as using them raw or in meals provides much more satiety than wine or brandy. It buffs wine and brandy by making them actual viable long-term storage for lots of berries while actually storing a good bit of the energy in the food. It also serves to concentrate the fruit down, so you don't need to chug liters of alcohol to barely get any calories. Just a few sips of brandy will provide a decent amount of calories.
I used blueberries and brandy as the example here but it applies across the board to brandys, ales etc.
- Jam is reconfigured to take 3 berry slots and 1 honey slot while providing very little meal bonus. This lets you preserve much more fruit into the winter at relatively low honey cost without being too overpowered. A bowl of jam made with 3 blueberries and 0.2 liters of honey provides 320 satiety, just 20 more than the base ingredients. The fact that it cost honey which can be difficult to mass produce is what helps keep this food item balanced.
- Cheese is massively buffed, cheddar cheese for example provides 57% of the satiety that was originally in the milk when eaten raw and 69% when used in a meal. This again incurs a cost in exchange for long term storage of dairy products without making cheese nearly unviable as a food source.
- I also mildly buffed eggs to make scrambled eggs as a whole more viable of a food. You can now only add one portion of cheese similar to the honey change for jam.
These changes should hopefully make these products feel more like actual strategies to preserve food and not just achievements to make your base look cool. Now you can enjoy some alcohol or some cheesy eggs without feeling like you threw away hundreds of hours for nothing.
