About this project

What does Variations on a Meal - Revaried add?

This fork of Variations on a Meal was made with permission from the original author Echoweaver. It fixes broken language entries from new base game content and includes a ton of new meal options thanks to new content and game code changes in 1.22, as well as some stuff I personally wanted to add.

"Ever wanted to make chicken and rice? A mushroom pie? What about a redcurrant wine reduction with chanterelle mushrooms? Hey, if you're from my part of the United States, you might even be longing for cheese grits (we'll forget that corn isn't even in the game at this point and pretend any grain will do). I thought we could do with a few more cooking options in vanilla." -Echoweaver

Original Changes:

  • Grain is an optional ingredient for meat and vegetable stews.
  • Egg may be added to vegetable stew. It was already an option for meat stew.
  • Milk and wine/cider/ale can be used as liquid base for soup with appropriate nutrition.
  • Milk, cheese, and egg are optional ingredients for porridge.
  • Mushrooms can be added to pies, but if you combine different types of mushrooms, it just turns into vegetable pie. It's currently not possible to make a generic mushroom pie, but this may change in the next game update. Damage from poisonous mushrooms does carry over into the pie.

Revaried Changes:

  • Pies
    • Different mushrooms will make different colors of mushroom pie!
    • Walnuts can now be put into pies. Mixing them with peanuts produces a mixed nut pie.
    • Mixing peanuts or walnuts with fruit in a pie produces a fruit and nut pie.
    • Eggs can be put into pies to produce a quiche. Mixing cheese into a quiche produces a cheese quiche or blue cheese quiche.
    • Termites and grubs can be put into pies.
    • Bushmeat and all cured meats can be put into pies, (3.1.1) as can vintage beef.
    • Pickled soybeans and vegetables can be put into pot pies.
    • (3.0.1) Generic mixed mushroom pies are now possible, and combining mushrooms and vegetables together will make a pot pie instead of a mixed vegetable pie.
    • (3.1.0) Vegetables can be added to quiches to make a vegetable quiche.
  • Meals
    • A slot of nuts may now be added to meat and vegetable stew. Anyone want some honey walnut chicken?
    • Porridge can now have nuts, fruit juice, and insects as optional ingredients.
    • Meat stew, vegetable stew, and scrambled eggs can take an optional slot of olive or linseed frying oil.
    • Bushmeat (raw and cured) can be put in all meat slots in meals, (3.1.1) as can vintage beef.
    • Honey is now optional in jam, and jam can take up to 4 slots of fruit. Up to 2 slots of fruit juice can also be added to jam.
    • (3.0.4) Soup can now have a slot of grain, (3.0.5) or a slot of dough to make dumplings, (3.2.0) and can have soybeans and peanuts as a vegetable.
    • (3.0.4) Vegetable stew can now have a slot of honey topping.
    • (3.1.1) Vegetable stew can have a slot of protein (meat, eggs, or insects).
    • (3.1.1) Meat stew can have a slot of insects.
    • (3.2.0) Scrambled eggs can have a slot of topping.
    • (3.2.0) Cottage cheese can be used as a topping for all meals with toppings

Future Plans
  • In plans for a future game update, it should become possible to make mixed ingredient pies from the same nutrition group with special names and textures instead of them automatically defaulting to the generic mixed name and texture for their nutrition group. When this happens I will be able to add in mixed mushroom pies with specific colors, among other things. For now they will have to make generic mushroom pies.
  • Quiches with meat are planned for the same update as above.
  • I would like to add more compatibility for other mods that add new ingredients, but it's a lot of work, so it won't happen immediately.
Known Issues
  • Mixed ingredient pies sometimes show the incorrect name with the correct texture. This is a base game bug and should be fixed in the next version.
  • Mixed mushroom pies are possible, but only by making them count as "grain" for pie filling purposes. They will still provide vegetable nutrition, this is only an internal labeling thing. This may cause language/texture issues if there are any mods that enable putting grain into pies. Mixed mushroom pies that maintain their color are not yet possible, until a way to have mixed pies of the same nutrition group is fully implemented.
  • People may or may not consider this an issue, but eggs can be added to any meat pie to create generic mixed meat pie. There's no way to change this currently, for the same reasons for the mushroom pie workaround. I could fix this by making eggs count as "NoNutrition", but I already did that to walnuts so that they wouldn't go in meat pies, and making them both "NoNutrition" would make them mixable together instead. So it's a one or the other situation. I'm open to arguments for changing this. Termites and grubs can also go into meat pies (or quiches), turning them into a generic meat pie, for the same reason.
  • (3.0.2) I found when attempting to make 2 different kinds of eggs into a quiche by giving them the "NoNutrition" categeory, even with a texture assigned, a mixed "NoNutrition" pie is still a missing texture pie. Eggs will stay in the protein category and able to go into mixed meat pies until a future game update. Mixing two kinds of eggs together produces a mixed meat pie, but adding cheese afterwards will turn it into a cheese quiche.
  • Long Term Food versions 0.6.9 and 0.7.0 will throw an error or crash with 3.1.4 and older versions of Variations. Update your mods.
Mod Compatibility

Compatible:

  • Boiled Bamboo was originally intended as an update for this and is fully compatible.
  • Eggs are supported from More Animals, Detailed Animals, and The Critters Pack ducks and crows. Thanks to Jayro for the help!
  • Seems to be compatible with Hydrate or Dydrate, but some meals provide unrealistic amounts of hydration considering it would really be mostly boiled off.
  • (3.0.2) Eggs from Sonya's Quality Fowl are also supported.
  • (3.0.3) Fruits, juices, wines, and oils from Biodiversity: Orchards and Biodiversity: Crops are supported. Thanks to KnewOne on the VS Discord for help.
  • (3.0.5) The Critters Pack Temp 1.22 duck and crow eggs are supported.
  • (3.1.0) Jam from Scoop of Jam can be added to fruit slots in porridge, and peanut butter can be added to the nuts slot in porridge and stews. You may want to disable the strict jam requirements setting or you will only be able to scoop the vanilla jam recipe and not the new options added by this mod.
  • (3.1.0) Blood Dough from Butchering can be used to make dumplings in soup. (3.1.1) Smoked bushmeat and offal can also be used as meat in all recipes, (3.1.3) as can raw and smoked sausages.
  • (3.1.1) Long Term Food has compatibility and new meal options for many of its ingredients in both meals and pies. Compatibility issue with LTF versions 0.6.9 and 0.7.0 is fixed with release (3.1.5).
  • (3.1.2) Mycodiversity mushrooms are compatible with mushroom pies
  • (3.1.2) Compatible with my Just Tofu mod. Tofu can go in the vegetable stew protein slot, soy curds can be used in place of cheese in porridge and pies, and soy milk and soy whey can be used in place of milk in porridge and soup.
  • (3.1.6) Vinegar can be used as a topping for stews and porridge, if you have any mod that enables the vanilla vinegar liquid, like my Just Vinegar mod.

Not Compatible:

  • Sonya's Meat Mod causes crashes to desktop because it outright removes a bunch of vanilla items, despite my best efforts to add compatibility. Sorry! Go complain to Sonya instead!
  • A Culinary Artillery/Expanded Foods seems to kind of work, but has a bunch of issues like removing the nutrition from the new soup liquid options.
  • Wildcraft: Fruit and Nuts does not work! If I remember correctly it removes some vanilla items, so that's probably why. There's zero reason to do this. Just disable obtaining them. Go complain to Sonya instead!
  • Probably compatible with most mods that add new basic ingredients, but may have language file errors or not work in new ingredient categories. If you report them here I can try and add compatibility.

Special thanks to many people in the VS Discord for helping me make this.

Report any bugs in the comments please! This is my first mod so I'm sure I missed something. If you have any balance suggestions regarding the new ingredients I enabled or suggestions for more recipe options, please share them as well.

If you want me to add compatibility to any mods, just ask and I'll do my best.
