About this project

What does Pixelmon Pokedex Scanner add?

Pixelmon Pokedex Scanner adds handheld Pokedex items for Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge and Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge. Right-click to scan the Pokemon in front of you.

The base Pokedex shows IVs, stats, nature, ability, and size on a retro radar chart, plus a compact battle HUD. Craft a Premium-tier device for palette, moves, current EVs, EV yield, type matchups, trainer / gym team scans, and the full battle overlay. All four Premium-tier items show the same scan data. Each one is a different device:

  • pokedex:unova — Unova tablet
  • pokedex:silph — Silph Co. terminal
  • pokedex:hisui — Hisui field journal
  • pokedex:paldea — Paldea phone

What this Pixelmon Pokedex does

Look at a Pokemon, NPC trainer, gym leader, or (on Premium-tier, if the server allows it) another player. Hold a Pokedex and right-click. The scanner grabs the target nearest your crosshair (then the closest one to you) and opens a scan screen. Leaves, plants, and water do not block the scan. On Premium-tier (and Kanto with as_premium), sneak (Shift) + right-click with nothing under the crosshair opens your own party. No privacy prompt. If you are sneaking and looking at a Pokemon, trainer, or player, that target is scanned instead. A wall or floor with nothing to scan still does nothing unless you are sneaking to read your own party.

Base Pokedex (pokedex:base)

Kanto-style clamshell. One Pokemon at a time. No party scans. No IV/EV toggle.

  • IV radar / spider chart — the web shape is IV rank (0–31 per stat)
  • Real stat values labeled around the hex (HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, Speed)
  • Nature arrows — red up for the boosted stat, blue down for the cut stat
  • Size / growth as a category (Pygmy through Ginormous). No 76.01x scale
  • Nature and ability (hidden abilities tagged)
  • Dex number, level, gender, and IV total out of 186
  • Caught mark — a small Poké Ball next to the name, filled if you have already obtained this form
  • Click anywhere on the screen to close it

Premium-tier devices

Same radar and Premium data on every one: palette (shinies recolor the name), moveset, current EVs, EV yield, weak to / strong against, and held item. Weak and strong lists wrap under the labels so the full set fits; the device grows downward instead of clipping. A type that appears on both lists is dropped from both (it cancelled out).

  • Unova (pokedex:unova) — landscape black tablet, cyan glow, status bar, side list, home pill
  • Silph (pokedex:silph) — steel and crimson terminal, CRT, keyboard, ENTER / RETURN key
  • Hisui (pokedex:hisui) — open leather journal, two parchment pages, wax seal
  • Paldea (pokedex:paldea) — portrait phone, stacked cards, home pill

IV / EV radar. Toggle the web between IVs (0–31) and the Pokemon's current EVs (0–252 per stat, 510 total). Yield stays a list line (YIELD / EV_YIELD). Each device uses its own chrome for the toggle — not a generic pager on every UI.

Team scans. NPC trainers and gym leaders open a party lineup, including when you aim at the Pokemon they have sent out (not only the NPC body). Tap a member for the full scan, then Back / Return to the roster. A gym boss with one Pokemon opens that member, not a fake 6-slot team. Wild Pixelmon stay a single scan. Your own sent-out Pokemon stays a solo scan. Empty party = miss.

Your party. Premium-tier: sneak + right-click on empty air. Same roster UI as a trainer scan. Config own_team (on with format = "full"). Stock Kanto leaves it off unless as_premium is true.

Other players. Default is Premium-tier only. Server config privacy.playerScan in pokedex-server.toml: permit, deny, or ask (default ask). Trainers and gyms are not gated. Ask sends clickable [Allow] [Deny] chat to the target (/pokedexscan accept or deny). The base Pokedex can scan players only if [kanto.handheld.custom] player_scan is true.

Click vs close. Arrows, sprites, bookmarks, and Back eat the click. Empty shell still closes. Escape still closes.

Battle overlay. Extra HUD during Pixelmon battles. The handheld screens stay the scanners. When a battle starts, a compact IV radar pops up in the top-right. Look is taken from the first Pokedex in offhand, then main hand, then hotbar slots 0–8. It follows the opponent currently out, including switches. Doubles add PREV MON / NEXT MON at the bottom to flip between field Pokemon; singles hide the buttons. Wild battles also show the same form-aware caught mark as the handheld scan, next to the name. Trainer, gym, player, and raid battles do not show the ball. Opening a handheld scan hides it. Clients cannot enable it themselves. Default is on.

  • Kanto (pokedex:base) — radar, dex number, IV%, gender, ability name, palette. No hidden-ability tag, no held item, no type matchups.
  • Premium (Unova, Silph, Hisui, Paldea) — ability (with (HA) when hidden), held item name, palette, and (unless the server hides them) weak to / strong vs under the labels, wrapping onto extra lines so the full lists fit. The overlay grows down, not wider. Types that appear on both lists are removed from both.

Handheld and overlay do not share field rules. Each has its own block in pokedex-server.toml.

Server config (1.7.1). The server decides what a scan may show. Hidden values are stripped before packets go out, so a client cannot reveal IVs, items, or hidden abilities the server turned off.

  • [features]scan, overlay, overlay_doubles, starter (all default true)
  • [privacy]playerScan = permit / deny / ask (default ask)
  • [kanto] as_premium — default false. When true, pokedex:base is a Premium-tier device (party roster, player scans, own-party sneak scan, premium handheld/overlay field rules). The screen stays the Kanto clamshell: party on the green LCD, D-pad toggles IV/EV. It does not become the Unova tablet.
  • Four display blocks: [kanto.handheld], [kanto.overlay], [premium.handheld], [premium.overlay]
  • Each block: enabled plus format = full (richest options), none (that surface off), or custom (per-field keys under .custom)
  • Custom field options include full / hide for most rows; ability = name_ha / name / hide; held_item = name / present / hide; nature = arrows / name / hide; ivs / evs = radar / percent / hide; hp = current / max / hide; handheld team_scan / player_scan / own_team = true / false

Kanto handheld default is custom (ability name, IV radar, no held item, no palette, no EVs, no matchups, no team/player/own-party scan). Kanto overlay default is custom (ability name, palette, no held item, no matchups). Premium handheld and overlay default to format = "full".

battle.mode is gone. disabled is now features.overlay = false. no_typing is premium.overlay.format = "custom" with matchups = "hide". starter.give_base is now features.starter.

How to get the Pokedex

First join. If you have no Pokedex of any kind, the server gives a base Kanto Pokedex once (features.starter in pokedex-server.toml, default true). Premium devices are never awarded this way.

Craft the base Pokedex:

  R
G B G
  R

R = Redstone
G = Glass Pane
B = Book

Upgrade from the base Pokedex. Every Premium-tier item uses the same layout: base Pokedex + Pixelmon Up-Grade + three vanilla items from that region.

Unova (pokedex:unova)       Silph (pokedex:silph)        Hisui (pokedex:hisui)        Paldea (pokedex:paldea)

Q = Nether Quartz           G = Gold Ingot               N = Ink Sac                  R = Redstone

P = Base Pokedex            P = Base Pokedex             P = Base Pokedex             P = Base Pokedex

Or give:

/give @p pokedex:base
/give @p pokedex:unova
/give @p pokedex:silph
/give @p pokedex:hisui
/give @p pokedex:paldea

Hold it in your main hand or offhand and right-click while aiming at a Pokemon (or, on Premium-tier, a trainer / gym / allowed player). Sneak + right-click on empty air reads your own party on Premium-tier. Range is about 24 blocks, centered on your crosshair.

Updating from 1.4.x: pokedex:premium remaps to pokedex:unova. Existing items in worlds keep working.

Why use an IV scanner Pokedex?

Stop guessing IVs in the field. This is a survival-friendly Pixelmon IV checker you carry like a real item. Scan breeding targets, shinies, bosses, trainers, or anything standing in front of you. Upgrade to a Premium-tier device when you need EVs, moves, matchups, and team lineups without leaving the world.

Install the matching jar in your CurseForge / mods folder, then fully quit and relaunch Minecraft. Remove any old separate premium-pokedex jar, and remove older Pokedex Scanner jars so only one remains.

FAQ

Does it scan IVs? Yes. The radar web is IV ranking; the numbers on the edge are the Pokemon's actual stats. Premium-tier devices can flip the web to current EVs.

Does it show nature and ability? Yes, including nature boost/cut arrows. Premium-tier devices also mark hidden abilities ((HA)). The base Kanto Pokedex shows the ability name only.

Does it show size? Yes — Pixelmon growth as a category (Ordinary, Huge, Pygmy, and so on). It does not show a 76.01x scale number.

What do the Premium-tier devices add? Palette, moveset, current EVs, EVs given on KO, held item, weak-to / strong-against, trainer / gym team scans, sneak-scan of your own party, and the full battle overlay (hidden ability, held item name, type matchups). All four Premium items show the same data. The screens look different. Weak and strong lists wrap under the labels. Types on both lists cancel out.

Can I scan another player's party? By default only with a Premium-tier device, and only if the server allows it (permit / deny / ask in pokedex-server.toml). Default is ask. Servers can set [kanto] as_premium = true to treat the base Pokedex as a Premium-tier device, or turn player_scan on under [kanto.handheld.custom].

Can I scan my own party? Yes, on Premium-tier (and Kanto with as_premium). Sneak (Shift) + right-click with nothing under the crosshair. There is no privacy prompt. Turn it off with own_team under the handheld custom block. Stock Kanto without as_premium leaves own_team off.

Can I scan through walls? No. Solid blocks block the scan. Leaves, plants, and water do not.

Singleplayer and servers? Both. Put the mod on the server and every client.

Is there a battle overlay? Yes, by default, on every Pokedex in offhand, main hand, or hotbar. It uses that device's look. Kanto is compact (no held item, no (HA), no matchups). Premium shows the full card. Doubles get Previous / Next on the overlay. Servers control it with features.overlay and the kanto.overlay / premium.overlay blocks in pokedex-server.toml. It does not replace the handheld scan screens.

Does this replace Pixelmon's built-in Pokedex? No. This is a handheld scanner item, not the dex completion menu.

I still have pokedex:premium. That ID is now pokedex:unova. Old items remap on load. Use /give @p pokedex:unova for new copies.
