About this project

What does Backrooms (addon Ghost Phone) add?

Backrooms is an add-on for the Ghost Phone mod for Minecraft (NeoForge 1.21.1) that introduces a separate "Backrooms" dimension—an endless, deserted expanse where familiar settings are no longer safe. It functions as a standalone file that requires the Ghost Phone mod to run; it does not alter the standard Minecraft world, as all new content exists exclusively within the Backrooms.

Players may find themselves transported there unexpectedly during ordinary gameplay, leaving them to search for a way out. The path to escape leads through a series of distinct spaces, each with its own unique rules, threats, and objectives. The add-on is designed for both solo play and multiplayer, as many challenges are easier to overcome with others.

Atmosphere

The core experience centers on a setting that feels familiar and mundane—yet fundamentally "off." Yellow wallpaper, the persistent hum of fluorescent lights, the sterile glow of an office, empty corridors, and faint, echoing public address announcements—everything seems harmless until you turn a corner. The fear here is rooted in anticipation and everyday details, rather than cheap jump scares.

The visual style is consistent throughout: realistic, richly textured surfaces, 3D models instead of flat, blocky shapes, cold artificial lighting, and a deliberate, slow-paced rhythm. The world feels unsettlingly plausible, brought to life by small, authentic touches—cracked floor tiles, scuff marks, worn-out signage, and emergency lighting.

Features
3D models and multi-layered textures. Blocks, items, furniture, equipment, and characters are composed of intricate details; surfaces are layered with signs of wear, grime, and subtle animations where you would expect them.
Synthesized audio. All sounds in the expansion—background ambience, footsteps, machinery, voices, signals—have been created from scratch, rather than sourced from existing libraries. There are over two hundred unique sound effects, with distinct ambient soundscapes for every location.
Custom creatures. More than a dozen mobs, each featuring unique models, animations, behaviors, and specific weak points. Every enemy requires a tailored approach; simply running or attacking head-on won’t always work.
Objectives and sub-tasks. Each area includes a primary objective and several sub-tasks that must be completed to unlock the path forward. Progress is tracked directly within the in-game interface, eliminating the need for external checklists.
Polished user interfaces. Every screen—including kiosks, control panels, instruments, and indicators—has been hand-drawn in a cohesive style, ensuring a look that stands apart from standard Minecraft menus.
Culture and language. Full localization in both Russian and English, covering names, tooltips, messages, audio subtitles, and achievements.
Achievements. A progression chain of advancements guides the player from their initial arrival to the final victory, providing direction without relying on overt hints.
Cooperative play. Certain challenges are designed for multiple players, requiring distinct roles: one person handles operations, while others provide defense and support.
No impact on the base game world. All new mechanics are confined exclusively to the Backrooms; characters from "Ghost Phone" appear only in locations dictated by the narrative.
