About this project

What does BATS! add?

Happy Halloween!!, but WAIT! this mod is built to stay installed all year!

What does this mod do?

Caves have always been a little too quiet.

This mod adds BATS which now roost in colonies on dark cave ceilings, sleeping through the day and pouring out at dusk to hunt through the night. They startle when you barge in, and they may even startle YOU when one decides it would rather fight than flee.

Sneak past a sleeping colony, scoop up guano (the white gold they leave behind) fertilize your crops with it, or cure it into renewable saltpeter. Just keep an eye on your livestock at night.

Features
~ Genuinely fantastic fluid animations. I studied bats to try to get them as real as possible.

~ Bats that don't get caught on walls or ceilings, seriously.

~ Bat colonies generate in caves with new chunks or slowly spawn in old worlds.

~ Bats dynamically find new homes and remember where their current home is. They rest at the roost between flights and return to the same spot each morning.

~ Bats sleep through the day and fly at night in loose flocks.

~ Bats flee from anyone standing or walking within about 7 blocks. Crouch and you can walk right under a sleeping colony. Chase one off and it remembers you for a while; sneaking won't fool it a second time.

~ Light a torch near a roost and the colony will move somewhere darker.

~ Hit a bat and it may swoop back at you. Startle one and there's a small chance it choose to fight instead of flight.

~ A bat knows you're trying to corner it, be careful!

~ Bats feed on large animals at night: deer, pigs, sheep, goats, and gazelles. They land beside the animal, crawl up, bite, and spring away before it can retaliate, then circle back for more. Bred animals are targeted before wild ones, so guard your farm.

~ Bats hibernate in their roosts when it's below freezing.

~ Guano builds up on the floor beneath roosts as layered blocks. It can't be broken by hand; right click it with a bucket to scoop up one litre per layer.

   * Pour guano slurry on farmland as fertilizer: 12% N, 9% P, and 1% K per litre.
   * Seal 5 litres in a barrel and it cures into 2 saltpeter over two weeks.
   * Ctrl + right click with a bucket of slurry to pour a layer back out.

~ Renewable saltpeter

~ Bats are killable, and occasionally leave a small hide behind.

~Halloween day easteregg ;)

Consider my other mods!

Deciduous Trees - Trees shed their canopy by local temperature.

Leaf Litter - Where all those leaves go. Rake them, jump in them, compost them.

Seasonal Flowers - Temperature-based mod that hides flowers in the winter and gives flowers a visual lifecycle.

Everything Black Raspberry - The classic Midwestern berry bush and its respective products.

Fast Packed Dirt Paths - Packed dirt, but faster to walk on.

FAQ

If your comment got deleted it was because you didn't even care to look here.

Q. Where do I find bats?
A. In caves, at least 8 blocks underground, hanging from the ceiling. Look up. New colonies only generate in chunks that haven't been explored yet, but bats will also move into dark places near you over time.

Q. Why won't bats roost in my build?
A. They need it dark and they need a solid ceiling to hang from.

Q. How do I get guano?
A. Find a roost and look down. Right click the pile with a bucket. Your hands won't work and I think you're filthy for even trying to use your bare hands.

Q. How fast does guano build up?
A. Slowly. Roughly one layer per bat every two in-game weeks of roosting. A big colony is a guano mine; a single bat is a hobby.

Q. My bucket is full of slurry, now what?
A. Right click farmland to fertilize it, or seal it in a barrel to make saltpeter. Hover over the bucket to see how much fertilizer each litre gives.

Q. Something is biting my animals at night?
A. That's a bat. They go for bred animals first. Each bite is small, but they come back for seconds. Defend your livestock.

Q. A bat attacked me for no reason?
A. You either hit it, or you startled it. It happens.

Q. Why aren't the bats flying in winter?
A. If it's below freezing, they're hibernating.

Q. Can I remove this mod mid-save?
A. Like all mods that add new blocks, use caution. Bats will simply disappear, but any guano left in your world becomes harmless white '?' blocks that can be removed by a server-side mod. Scoop up your guano before you remove it.

Q. Is this mod compatible with X?
A. It plays nice with the vast majority of mods.

Q. Why did you make this mod?
A. Every Halloween mod gets uninstalled on November 1st. I wanted one that belongs in the world year round. I like Fall. Autumn is good.
