About this project
What does Deciduous Trees add?
ECO MACHINA IS REQUIRED FOR FANCY BRANCHES
but, it is not required for the mod to function. Compare with screenshots for the look you want.
Want your deciduous trees to drop leaf litter? Try my companion mod Leaf Litter!
What does this mod do?
Deciduous trees will now slowly enter and exit dormancy based off local temperature. This effects mirrors real life and allows you to enjoy seasonal immersion. Since the changes are local, emergent microclimates will form. Valleys will stay green longer, autumn descends down mountains in an altitudinal gradient, Foliage can be stunted due to cold snaps in the spring, etc.
When leaves disappear for the season, their hitboxes do as well, despite never being removed from your world. Leaves will slowly return when temperatures improve.
Summarized by users: "Real leaf fall! Falling leaves! REAL!!!!!! PEAK!"
~ Temperature-based tree canopy hiding. This means trees may lose their leaves at different points in time across the map, rather than strictly in winter.
~ Canopy acts bare, snow will accumulate beneath deciduous trees, and will thaw in spring.
~ Trees smoothly lose their canopy during autumn or in the case of the tropics, if a coldsnap frightens the tree.
~ Trees smoothly gain their canopy when temperatures improve.
~ Trees of varying species leaf out at different times.
~ Particles gently rain from the trees during autumn to simulate falling leaves.
~ Evergreens do not lose their leaves. If you want to add to the list of trees unaffected you can edit the config.
~ Hidden leaves have no hitbox or cursor highlights, so you won't notice them or trip on invisible blocks (use the config if you still want cursor highlights in case they get in the way of winter construction.)
~ Snow does not accumulate on hidden leaves, but does accumulate on evergreens. Snow "falls through" the bare branches of trees.
~ Vines don't appear on hidden leaves.
~ This mod can safely be uninstalled at any time. Even when all of your trees are bare, uninstalling this mod does nothing to harm your save. This mod is almost a visuals only mod.
~ Partial compatibility for mods, including a config so you can change which trees should and shouldn't lose leaves. Modded trees work in the config. It's not populated with modded trees by default as it would open Pandora's box for unrelated bugs.
~ There may be a hidden Halloween day easter egg...
Consider my other mods!
Leaf Litter: A Companion mod made to go with Decidous Trees. Produces leaf litter that slowly builds up under trees. Rake it up and use it as mulch!
Seasonal Flowers: Another temperature-based mod that hides blocks in the winter, giving flowers a visual lifecycle.
Everything Black Raspberry: A mod that adds the classic Midwestern berry bush and it's respective products. Tons of compatibility patches. Lots of love went into this mod.
Fast Packed Dirt Paths: A mod that makes packed dirt faster to walk on.
Note: This is largely a personal mod, this mod gives me massive headaches and I probably won't be too active on it. I also reserve full rights to say "no" on bad ideas for it.
Mods Section
Q. Does this mod need Eco Machina to run?
A. As of 1.3.0 Eco is no longer required, but STRONGLY recommended. You can see the visual difference in the images above.
Q. What happens if I don't use Eco Machina?
A. The tree will appear more vanilla-like. Square trunks, fruit tree branches. Compare pictures in the showcase to see examples.
Q. Why do my trees not have branches like in the first picture?
A. Mod needs Eco Machina for fancy curvy branches.
Q. Can I use foliage recolors, or mods that modify seasonal tint?
A. Yes! I made sure that mods like Natural Foliage are unbothered.
Q. Can I add or remove this mod from existing saves?
A. Yes! You can even remove the mod when the leaves are bare, they're not actually removed, so your trees are safe. The snow accumulated underneath the leaf canopy may stay if you uninstall mid-winter.
Q. Evergreens from modded trees lose their leaves?
A. I'm hesitant to include modded trees into the config by default as it would be playing favorites to the infinite number of tree adding mods. You can add the trees you want to keep leaves in the config yourself. In comments to this mod, MrFastZombie made a comprehensive list that is ready to use here.
Gameplay Section
Q. It says a "block is in the way" and I can't build there?
A. The mod doesn't actually physically remove the leaves from trees (if it did, your game would massively lag). You're trying to place a block where hidden leaf blocks are. Change the your own client-side config (not the server config if you're on a server) to see the hidden leaves and then cut them down. Or burn them. Or wait for spring.
Q. Bushes keep spawning where i'm working, this mod is broken.
A. Previously, placing into hidden blocks this was forbidden and it prevented players from incurring this issue. The game believes it's creating new dormant bushes whenever you build under branchy leaves. Enable block highlights if it gets too annoying.
Q. The falling leaf particles make me lag, is there a fix?
A. Sorry about that, turn them off in the config as "ParticleFallingLeaves".
Q. I am evil and do not like Fall or the gradual leaf shedding, can I turn it off?
A. Yes, much to my ire, it's in the config as "AutumnDrop". The mod will instead jump straight to winter mod when it gets too cold.
Q. I don't want X type of tree to lose leaves, is there a way for me to exclude it?
A. Yeah, there is a config for dormancy temperatures and leaf exclusions.
Misc. Section
Q. Why did you make this mod?
A. I've always wanted to see actual desolate winters in a sandbox game. Fall is also my favorite season, and I look forward to it all year round. I've been trying to bribe people to make this mod for a while now, and since Eco Machina originally did the heavy lifting, I decided to try. I'm a finance bro by trade, not a coder. But homesickness for Michigan is sorta bridging the gap. By now, the mod no longer needs Eco Machina and I've grown as a programmer, solving the original hurdle that prevented me from making the mod. We've come full circle.
Q. If this mod falls out of date can I fork or patch it?
A. If I'm MIA for a while, you have the authority to patch, do not fork.
