About this project
What does Eternal Stew add?
DO NOT feed my mods to AI - if you ask, I will teach you what I know.
History:
From Wikipedia - "A perpetual stew, also known as forever soup, hunter's pot, or hunter's stew, is a pot into which foodstuffs are placed and cooked, continuously." The longest reported of them lasting over 50 years. This is achieved by maintaining a non-stop simmer (200°F/93°C), which kills bacteria and prevents new pathogens from growing.
This is why our Eternal Stew will never be crock-able. Allowing the stew to cool causes it to rot rapidly. It must be eaten fresh from the "living" pot to be safe to consume.
Eternal Stew comes to Vintage Story!
The core concept here is to be able to throw any food items into the pot, and get a good meal in return. The vanilla stew-cooking system requires even numbers and only has four slots, as well as specific ratios of specific types of foods to even work - so what do you do with that one piece of left-over redmeat and a handful of berries? Instead of being stuck eating them raw like a peasant, or just tossed on the fire without salt, or letting them rot in storage, add them to your Eternal Stew pot! Leftovers are the life-blood of the Eternal Stew.
Added blocks and how it works;
Eternal Stew adds a purpose-built stove and pot for true perpetual stewing: keep a batch simmering, top it up with liquid and ingredients, and ladle out bowls on demand.
- You craft the stove from clay brick slabs, cobblestone and fire clay.The pot is made from a fired clay cooking pot plus a metal plate; your inputs set the stove’s brick color and the pot’s metal finish.
- Place the pot on the stove, add 10 L of liquid to start, fuel with firewood/peat/coal, light with a torch, and drop ingredients straight from your hotbar into the stewpot.
- The stewpot accepts up to 64 ingredients by default. You can add more ingredients at any time as long as there is space, the pot is heated, and you have enough broth - this is CONFIGURABLE
- Broth will deplete over time with servings, top off the pot with more liquid when it gets too low to continue adding ingredients.
- Contents change color/texture based on what you added.
- Acceptable offerings ingredients: Most objects that have satiety will be allowed in the stewpot.
- Each bowl inherits nutrition from the current stew - this is CONFIGURABLE
- As long as there is a fire lit in the stove, the stew will not rot
- Fuel burn is heavily reduced in simmer/kept-warm modes for long-running batches. Stove accepts up to 32 fuel (firewood, peat, coals) by default - this is CONFIGURABLE
- Stew age bonuses: at 3 months, bowls grant warmth (+0.5°C base, +0.1°C per month after, cap +2°C). There is no duration for the warmth buff, just a one time increase at time of consumption. At 6 months, bowls also reduce hunger rate (-3% base, -1% per month after, cap -15%), duration 5m + 2m per month, cap 30m.
- To maintain your age bonus, do not let the fire go out!!!
NEW! Many Broths;
Escalate your stew exaltation with bases beyond water - booze, milk, blood, broths - give life to your stew. This provides bonus satiety to your Eternal Stew, matching the type of liquid you add. The Eternal Stew now hosts a multitude of broths simultaneously. Your willingness to experiment with satiety-bearing liquids is the limit of what can go in the pot.
The broth in the pot now absorbs 10% of the satiety of all solid food added to it as well, enriching the broth with every morsel.
NEW! Return to the Stew;
Partially eaten bowls of stew can now be returned to the pot. Simply sneak to dump your leftovers back into the stew! This applies to all meals, not just bowls of Eternal Stew. Additionally, non-pot meals can now be added to the stew as well - such as slices of pie, bread, fruit bars, and slices of cheese. This is not an extensive list: if you find something that does not yet go in the pot, let us know!! All things must return to the Stew.
Further, food objects that have begun to rot cannot necessarily return to the stew. If something is more than 25% spoiled, the stew will reject it. I blame it's newfound sentience for this quirk.
NEW! Propogating the Eternal Stew;
Are you moving house and are not using CarryOn? Do you have a new outlying neighbour you want to give the ultimate housewarming gift? Do you wish to share the cult boons of a well aged stew? Now, this can be done. From a stewpot that has had all solids removed from it, sneak and take one precious bowl of "seed broth". Include this in the initial simmer of a new pot (10L of liquid is still required total, but only 1L of "seed broth" needs to be included in that amount). The inclusion of a "seed broth" provides the new stewpot with half the aging bonus of the parent stewpot. This does not stack in any way, the baby stew will only ever be brought up to half the aging bonus of its parent stew using this method.
Mod Compatibility:
ConfigLib - The following values can now be adjusted using ConfigLib's in-game GUI: burn multipliers, fuel cap, ingredient cap, simmer duration
CarryOn - Because we understand better than anyone that builds change, and the Stew shouldn't be punished for that. The stove and the pot are separate blocks, so move the stewpot first. Don't move the poor thing while it's simmering - how would you feel if you go interrupted while doing your thing by some random person picking you up. Moving the Stew while it's simmering, or picking up the stove it's sitting on, makes bad things happen. Don't kill the Stew. We don't approve of killing the Stew in this house.
Supported Food Mods: This is not an exhaustive list, there are catch-all's built into Eternal Stew that mean sometimes, things from other mods are automatically able to be stewed. If it has satiety, it probably goes in the pot. For specific texturing, follow the instructions below.
Expanded Foods (and the related mod suite/depedencies)
But we want more modded foods/fuels in the Stew too!!
And we are here for that. All things must go in the Stew.
The Eternal Stew stove supports modded fuels via a simple JSON flag. Add "eternalstewStoveFuel: true" to the attributes section of any item with valid combustibleProps (burnDuration > 0). Tested with a couple of mods such as Fuel Briquettes and More fuel but it should work with any fuel. We don't have any of these enabled out-of-the-box, but it is very easy to add to any fuel asset.
The Eternal Stew pot also supports modded food items. If you know/can find the code name of a food item, and it has nutrition/satiety values, it can be added to a file named "ingredient-visuals-and-acceptance" in the Eternal Stew zip. Just repack after making changes, then plug-in-and-play. (Working on a config for this to make it even easier). This can also be done by modders in their mods by including another flag. Instructions to do this are packed into the Eternal Stew zip. Currently, Butchering and BaconBaconBacon are included out-of-the-box. And more will come. We will only be adding support for mod foods if the mods are functional in v1.22+ of Vintage Story.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- As of v1.3.0 the modid was changed; any placed stoves/pots from previous versions will no longer exist due to this renaming. We never want to kill the Stew, but this change will do that to any existing one from before 1.3.0
- At this time, the only supported liquid is water - alternative broth compatibility and liquid ingredients is a WIP
Roadmap:
- More compatibility for raw food ingredients from other mods (Expanded foods, Long-term foods, etc) - MAKE REQUESTS FOR YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD MOD
- Add support for vanilla liquids such as milk/honey as well as broths from mods.
- Add entire small game carcasses to the pot (Butchering compat, advanced :P)
- Give different metal variants of the stew pot different properties (burn rate multiplier, reduced cook time, etc)
- Stew pot variants: stone age (smaller capacity with tradeoffs like higher fuel use / lower nutrition), metal age (current version of the pot), and possibly a larger end game pot
- Representing different fuel types in the stove visual fuel stack
- Add clearer at‑a‑glance stew stats in the GUI (satiety/nutrition/health info)
- Support for adding entire meals as ingredients (including whole pies and cheese wheels 😆)
- Toggle for allowing poisonous mushrooms into the pot to facilitate culinary crimes
- Allow salt as an ingredient that provides bonuses to the stew (and makes your character say YUM)
- Allow fat/resin as a fuel source for the stove
- Expand the config to allow adjustment of satiety multiplier, how much satiety to target for a bowl, etc. More knobs to tailor your stew experience to your liking!
- Add commands to allow aging of the stew (both for debugging and testing as well as cases where you did an uh-oh with your stew)
Wish List:
- Larger, multiblock oven and stove blocks (2x2x1 or 2x2x2) for even larger stews
- Adding some sort of stirring mechanic to the pot with a custom stew pot ladle/spoon item.
- Potentially look at creating a 3rd custom block that would be optional: a block that attaches to one of the side faces of the stove that allows you to add surplus fuel that gets funneled into the fire as needed.
- Allow chutes to add food items to the pot in order to bring industrial age advancements to a stew near you
- The ability to add a stovetop surface to allow vanilla cooking on top of the stove
Known Issues:
- Config settings are not synced between server and client which causes the block info on the stove and pot to display only client config values instead of server config values (fix identified, will likely be in the next update)
Special thanks to the Blackrock crew for their feedback and and creative ideas during development, this journey all started with them. Also huge thanks goes to unHallowed, my lovely partner in modding. It is not an exaggeration to say this mod would not exist at all without their help and encouragement. And, of course, we would be nothing without our the unhinged support and enthusiasm of some very awesome players - seriously, we love the Stew obsession in the EF discord <3
