About this project

What does Spells & Spellcrafting add?

Spells and Spellcrafting

A classic-fantasy magic mod: craft wands, gather reagents, cast 57 spells across six power levels, and raise an undead army to fight for you.

Spells and Spellcrafting is a NeoForge 1.21.1 magic mod built around three ideas: wands you build and upgrade, a reagent economy that gates raw spell power, and a summonable army of Risen minions that follow and guard you in the field. It runs fully standalone — no required dependencies.

Wands

Craft a wand from any of six materials (Wooden through Netherite) and inlay it with a gem for extra power. Material tier, gem tier, and (on found wands) quality all multiply your spell output — a Netherite wand with a Diamond gem hits substantially harder than a starter Wooden one, and at Brilliant quality reaches 5.06×. Creative wands bypass reagent cost and cooldowns entirely.

Right-click your wand to open a colored radial menu that groups spells by school. Left-click to instantly re-cast your last spell.

57 spells across 6 levels

Cantrips are free to cast (your at-will options); level 1–5 spells scale in power, cost, and cooldown. The radial groups spells into four schools by color:

  • Attack — bolts, blasts, fireballs, chain lightning, arcane missiles, and area-effect strikes
  • Defense — shield spells, mirror image, sanctuary, healing
  • Utility — flight, feather fall, haste, enlarge (self and target), polymorph, mage hand, teleport, gear repair, and more
  • Summon — Risen zombie, skeleton, spider, enderman, wither skeleton — plus the Devourer (see below)

Each spell has a reagent cost tuned to how easy its components are to gather. Cantrips are always free; higher-level spells need rarer materials.

Reagent Pouch

A dedicated storage item with a slot per reagent type and overflow slots for surplus. Auto-sorts on close. One-click stocking from an adjacent chest; one-click emptying back to a chest.

The Risen — your undead army

Summon a horde of Risen minions to fight alongside you. Each type has its own strengths (Risen Spiders climb, Risen Endermen teleport, Risen Wither Skeletons hit hardest). Your army cap grows as you level up. Cast Call Horde and Dismiss Horde (both cantrips) to bring your entire army into stasis for travel and re-summon them at your destination — no leash management, no wandering AI to chase down.

Attuned Grimoire — wand-carried army enchants

Five new enchantments a wand can carry, each with a different concrete effect on each of the five Risen types. While the enchanted wand is held, your entire minion army is buffed army-wide; swap to a sword or bow and the buffs drop instantly.

  • Gravity (control) — reel, shove, root, or stun.
  • Ferocity (offense) — bonus damage, executes, sharper bolts, capped damage reflect.
  • Ravening (sustain) — heal off your own attacks; tuned below real incoming fire so it never becomes an immortal farm.
  • Contagion (debuff) — Weakness, Hunger, Nausea, a small Wither splash, and a focus-fire mark.
  • Warding (defense) — survive a lethal hit, dodge, Resistance aura, Wither reflect.

Ferocity, Ravening, and Warding are mutually-exclusive combat stances (a wand carries only one). Gravity and Contagion stack onto any stance and onto each other. Books drop in loot chests (~4% per eligible chest); loot wands are often pre-enchanted (~75%). Apply books at an anvil like any other enchant.

The Devourer

A phylactery-controlled digging swarm. Feed it ingots to raise its mining tier (Wooden through Netherite); enlarge it for wider bores. Direct it to carve tunnels, clear areas, cut staircases, or fell entire trees. A chaos mode turns it loose on the terrain.

On-screen HUD + in-game guidebook

  • Spell cooldowns appear above your hotbar so you know what is ready
  • Active buffs sit in the corner with live countdown timers
  • The included guidebook explains every spell, reagent, and tool
  • A wandering Reagent Merchant appears in the world periodically to trade reagents

Requires / compatible with

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.224 or newer
  • Java 21
  • No required mod dependencies
  • Optional: Zombie Village — the two integrate lightly (the Devourer respects village protection zones)

Safe to include. Configurable via a standard config file. Client + server both need it (the wand radial menu is client-side; combat + summoning are server-side).
