Quick answer
Which Veganized release should I use?
Veganized 2.4.4 targets 1.22.3, 1.22.4, 1.22.5. It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional. No extra mods listed for this file.
Where it goes
Is Veganized required on the client, server, or both?
It must be installed on the client. Installation on the dedicated server is optional.
This release supports both sides, but the source does not require it on the server.
What else does Veganized 2.4.4 need?
2.4.4. Change the file and its required mods may change too.
This file does not list any required mods. Do not add a library just because a different file uses it.
We only count dependency files that match this setup. A file for another loader does not fill the gap.

About this project
What does Veganized add?
Vintage Story gates a lot of things behind two animal products: rendered fat and beeswax. This mod opens both, and it does it by making plants produce the real vanilla items rather than inventing stand-ins that no recipe accepts.
That distinction is the whole design. A separate "plant fat" or "plant wax" item would need every recipe in the game patched to accept it, and every recipe in every other mod too. Producing game:fat-rendered and game:beeswax themselves means everything simply works, including recipes from mods that do not exist yet.
Fat
The game already has a plant-oil economy. Flax grinds to flour and cooks into linseed oil, and olives press into olive oil. But no plant oil can become rendered fat, so oiled hide, oil lamps, mechanical grease and the fruit press all still demand an animal.
- Sunflower cooks into oil the same way flax does.
- Peanuts press in the fruit press, leaving defatted peanut powder. It is high protein and lighter in calories, which is what pressing peanuts for oil actually yields.
- Plant oil renders into
game:fat-renderedin a cooking pot.
Wax
Beeswax gates candles, candles gate lanterns, and lanterns gate the lantern walking stick. So one bee product gates all portable light, plus sturdy leather and waxed cheese.
- One resin plus one clay crafts into three wax, shapeless. Clay is the purifying agent: bleaching earth is the real method for cleaning waxes, and it takes raw resin's tack out.
- Candles additionally accept rendered fat directly.
- Because bees are no longer the only source, the item is renamed to plain Wax.
This follows a rule the game already set: vanilla's own bow recipe accepts rendered fat, resin or beeswax interchangeably for the same coating slot. Sturdy leather and candles were simply left out.
Fertiliser
Phosphorus is the last animal-gated nutrient in the game. Compost already covers nitrogen and potash covers potassium, both from plants or minerals. But bone meal is the only strong phosphorus source, and it gates terra preta too, at two to four per batch.
- Kelp and seaweed drop when broken. In vanilla both yield nothing at all.
- Both grind in a quern into the real bone meal item, renamed to Phosphate meal now that bone is not the only source.
- They drop the block itself, so a harvested bed can be replanted in full water on any sandy or gravelly bottom.
- Kelp grows back. Vanilla gives it no growth tick at all, so a bed never returned once harvested. Kelp drops two and regrows upward; seaweed drops one and does not grow, so its drop stays at one rather than becoming a place-and-break loop.
Kelp growth is server-side only and never runs on a client. Rate, height cap and an on/off switch live in ModConfig/veganized-kelpgrowth.json, or change them live with /kelpgrowth.
Balance
A resin log gives 1 resin and takes 7 in-game days to regrow, so wax from resin is a steady trickle rather than a tap. Kelp regrows and seaweed does not, which is why kelp drops two per harvest and seaweed drops one. Nothing that already worked is removed or made slower.
Compatibility
Seaweed Farming pairs with this rather than clashing, and in fact benefits from it. That mod patches nothing: its cultivated seaweed drops game:seaweed-section, and its crafting recipe consumes vanilla seaweed plus compost. Vanilla seaweed drops nothing at all, so this mod is what makes that recipe reachable outside creative mode.
Botanical Leathers grows plant-based hides from cactus, cork, fungus and fruit, but they are a separate item tree from the game’s own, so nothing that asks for a real hide or pelt accepts them. Rendered fat plus a prepared botanical hide now oils into a vanilla game:hide-oiled, at vanilla’s own ratio for each size. It gives you the oiled hide rather than the finished pelt, so it still cures for 48 hours exactly as an animal one does, and what you end up with is a real pelt that satisfies every recipe wanting one. The recipe is dependsOn-gated, so without Botanical Leathers installed it does not exist at all. There is no error and nothing to configure.
Expanded Foods gets two things. Every Expanded Foods cooking oil (flax, seed, rice bran, soybean, sunflower, peanut and olive) cooks into rendered fat in a pot, just like vanilla linseed and olive oil. And there is a flax egg: grind flax grain into flax flour in a quern, then seal 1 flax flour and 1 litre of water in a barrel for 2 hours. One litre is ten eggs' worth, and it works in place of egg in Expanded Foods soft dough, pasta, hardtack, breading, stuffed peppers and dressings, so dumplings and muffins no longer need eggs. It does not stand in where the egg is the food itself, like scrambled, boiled or pickled eggs, quiche or egg in soup. The flax egg goes off in about two days. All of it is dependsOn-gated, so without Expanded Foods none of it exists and nothing errors.
Beeswax and animal fat keep working everywhere. Nothing is removed.
