About this project
What does Placeable Plants: Expanded add?
This mod started as a direct Forge/NeoForge fork of the Placeable Plants mod by BisUmTo,
but later on grew into an expanded version of it.
📖 About 📖
This fork expands the original idea to work with nearly all plant-type blocks, including modded ones, instead of only a smaller selective set. And as a side effect, it also allows plants to generate during worldgen on many non-soil blocks, which can make the world look surprisingly overgrown, detailed, and interesting.
The original mod already had a really nice simple concept: let vegetation be placed on far more block surfaces than vanilla normally allows. That opens up a lot of extra freedom for builders who want to add more detail and decoration to their builds.
As the original author also pointed out, the idea makes intuitive sense too - in real life, many plants do manage to grow out of tiny cracks in stone and other unexpected places.
Main differences from the original:
- Works much more broadly for plant-type blocks across the board
- Supports both vanilla and modded plants
- Excludes farm-dependent crops/plants that require farmland
- Excludes tree saplings, which keep their normal vanilla-style placement rules
- Also affects world generation, allowing plants to appear on many non-soil surfaces
(Can be disabled in the config) - Includes configurable placement & worldgen blacklists for controlling which blocks plants can use
Worldgen side effects:
One side effect of this broader behavior is that plant placement rules can also influence natural generation in interesting ways. You can now sometimes find vegetation generating in places where vanilla normally would not allow it, such as:
- rocky patches
- ravines
- beaches
- deserts
- icy ocean / lake floors
- cliffs and mountains
- structures
- other unusual surfaces, depending on your config
This was originally a completely accidental side effect, but it turned out to look surprisingly good in practice and gives the world a much more overgrown, detailed, and natural-looking feel.
This effect can look especially nice alongside mods that expand foliage and natural environmental detail, such as Project: Vibrant Journeys, [Let's Do] BloomingNature, Geophilic,...
Config
The mod includes a "placeable-common.toml" config file inside the "config" folder.
- "placement_blacklist"
- Blocks or block tags that plants cannot be placed on at all.
- This affects both manual placement and world generation.
- Empty by default.
- "worldgen_blacklist"
- Blocks or block tags that plants cannot generate on during world generation.
- This only affects world generation, not manual player placement.
- Includes
#minecraft:leavesby default, so plants shouldn't generate on top of leaf blocks.
